Do I Recommend W by Worth?
While I’m sure some people make money with W by Worth, I suspect that most don’t. It’s also not a company that I recommend. The items aren’t competitive enough for their market and most people would struggle to make sales. I would always recommend affiliate marketing for clothing anyway. With that approach, someone else has to deal with any returns and other complexities.
What Products Does W by Worth Sell?
W by Worth is a women’s clothing company, one that focuses mostly on upmarket and fashionable items.
Like many clothing companies, they release seasonal catalogs. The clothes vary depending on what is in fashion and what the company chooses to focus on.
As you can see from the images, the visual styles are somewhat unusual. Local clothing stores may have some similar items but they’re unlikely to have all of the styles and types of product.
I haven’t seen many reviews for the clothes, probably because of their prices. But, general view is that the items are decent enough, just not as good as you’d expect for the price.
That makes them less appealing. Still, that wouldn’t stop people buying them if they loved the style.
Is W by Worth A Good Business Opportunity?
From the products alone, it’s clear that W by Worth focuses on the sense of luxury and exclusivity. This suggests that it should be a good way to make money too.
But, that’s surprisingly difficult to determine.
W by Worth does use a direct marketing model. Distributors also promote items through Trunk Parties and by providing stylist services. But, there is no information about actually making money – or what you need to do.
The fact that you’re hosting parties suggests that you will need some stock. Images from the site support that idea too. I’ve also seen mentions of shipping fees and customers waiting for items.
This makes sense. It wouldn’t be practical to own all the items you hope to sell, especially with how expensive W by Worth pieces are.
As for how much you earn, that’s anyone’s guess. The information isn’t available online and distributors avoid talking about it as well. However, I suspect that the income per sale is decent, simply due to the price of the items.
This is also a network marketing company, so the idea is to recruit and make money that way. Without details, it’s impossible to know what the underlying system is or how it works. But, the general concept is that the larger your team is, the more income you can make.
It’s worth thinking seriously about that pattern.
Do you know enough people that would buy the products regularly and let you make money from sales? What about recruitment? Would your contacts be interested in joining a company like this? Would they have the money to invest?
What I Like About W by Worth
Even without details about all the systems of W by Worth, it’s possible to get a sense of the company and what to expect. There are also some encouraging aspects about it.
1. Their clothing styles
Clothing is a very personal topic. Everyone has their own views about what they like and don’t. And of course, I’m not the target audience for this company.
Still, the clothing styles are unusual enough that they would attract attention.
2. The stylist concept
A key concept of W by Worth is the distributors, who are called Stylists. The idea is that Stylists help to guide customers, teaching them about clothing and providing a very personal experience.
As the company points out, this a much more individualized process than you would ever find in a conventional store. The appeal is easy to see.
This would be particularly powerful for women who struggle with fashion or shopping. Having one-on-one support and advice could help them to learn more about good choices and find the best fit for their needs.
The idea makes W by Worth stand out too. Personalized services like this aren’t common, especially not in the fast-paced retail world. This could increase the potential for sales.
3. The marketing focus
Everything about W by Worth emphasizes concepts of quality and style. This makes the company feel premium right from the beginning.
The idea won’t suit everyone, of course. But it is a good way for the company to stand out. Many people do find quality appealing, so the idea could convert into more sales.
4. The sales potential
Clothing is a popular industry and can be considered evergreen. This means that sales are always made, regardless of the economy or people’s financial situation.
That pattern happens because clothing makes people feel good and tends to be a want, rather than a need. For example, you might buy some new items of clothing when summer rolls around, even if the items from the previous year are still perfectly good.
But, of course, W by Worth isn’t your only option here. You don’t have to open your own clothing boutique or anything like that either. You could choose to promote clothing other ways, such as by affiliate marketing.
For example, there are many fashion affiliate programs to choose from. These let you sell items that are competitive and appealing, without having to own or ship them yourself. The company has to deal with all the complexities and any returns that come with those clothes.
So, there is the opportunity for sales with the products. Just be aware that this isn’t the only option.
What I Don’t Like About W by Worth
While there are some good aspects about the company, there are some concerning patterns as well. It’s still possible to make money, even with these limitations. But, you need to carefully weigh them up and consider whether the process is worth the risk.
1. The lack of information
W by Worth offers very little information about making money. Doing so does involve becoming a Stylist and hosting Trunk Shows. But, there is very little information beyond those concepts.
Instead, W by Worth has visitors fill in a form and promises to get in touch with information. The idea does make sense. W by Worth is promoting a sense of exclusivity, so they don’t want their compensation plan to be too obvious.
The pattern is still concerning. It means there is no way to know how much you’ll be making and you can’t see whether the style even makes sense.
In fact, this is one of the most secretive companies that I’ve come across. Most of the time, you can figure out the compensation plan or the general concepts with a little digging. But, not here. Instead, there is almost no information. If you want to know the specifics, you would need to find a Stylist and talk to them.
But, be warned. Regardless of the company, distributors tend to be biased. Sometimes this is because they’re trying to get you involved. In other cases, they’re simply convincing themselves the opportunity is great. Either way, you’re unlikely to get the full story from a W by Worth Stylist.
2. The competition
As I mentioned before, clothing will always sell. Unfortunately, everyone else knows this too. As a result, there are countless other companies out there that sell clothing.
These companies all have different angles, including quality, price and style. Some of them have similar types of clothes to W by Worth, with the same type of luxury emphasis.
You would be competing against all of these places as a W by Worth distributor. There are also other network marketing companies that follow the same idea. One is LuLaRoe, which has been in the news recently. In that case, the clothing is more casual and is less expensive.
Another option is CAbi. This one has a greater focus on elegance and luxury, with relatively expensive products as well. Even so, their items are cheaper than W by Worth and often receive better reviews.
Even if you personally think that the W by Worth products are worth the price tag – the competition truly is intense. To be successful, you’d have to convince people that the clothing is amazing.
Is that realistic?
3. The pricing
From a sales perspective, the prices from W by Worth are a serious issue. Many of the items cost hundreds of dollars and are far outside the budget of many people.
In fact, even simple items can be pricy – like a knotted sash that costs more than $100.
There are certainly people that would pay this much for clothing. But, this is a fairly small audience. The style naturally limits how many people you can sell too. It’s easy to see how this would be a problem.
Even when people do have the money, they’ll often hesitate to spend it. On average, more expensive items require more work to make a sale.
4. Clothing by mail order
To make matters worse, W by Worth isn’t like a conventional store. Customers don’t get the ability to try on items and then own them the same day.
Instead, they only have access to whatever samples the Stylist has. The products that they actually want need to be ordered, which takes time. This never feels like a great system, as clothing is such an impulse-driven purchase.
Many people simply won’t be comfortable ordering in this way.
Clothing is a tough product to work with anyway, as customers often change their mind or want refunds. This adds another layer of complexity and you’ll be limited by the company’s return policy.
Even if W by Worth was amazing with returns, they could never please everyone. Plus, you’d be stuck with a large amount of legwork, which is never appealing.
A key reason for buying expensive clothes is how long they last. Many cheap products will only last a few years and they may become faded or stretched long before people want to stop wearing them. On the other hand, a high-quality item can last much longer and looks better throughout this time as well.
There are many exceptions. But, this is a good general rule.
All of the marketing from W by Worth implies that their products are upmarket and high-quality. The marketing and the pricing should mean that the products are at least above average.
But, reviews don’t agree. Instead, some people suggest that the clothing just isn’t that amazing and often needs to be modified. One such reviewer stated that she purchased a significant number of items that she then needed to get modified because of sizing issues. Even afterward, the fit of the items wasn’t that good.
I didn’t see many reviews say that the clothing was horrible. Instead, the general sense is simply that the items aren’t great. When you factor in the cost of the items and the extra effort in ordering them – the process just doesn’t seem worth it.
This is directly relevant to the income opportunity.
If you want to sell the clothes, you need your customers to be happy. If they are, they’ll come back time and time again to make purchases. They’ll be more likely to recommend you to their friends as well.
But, if the products aren’t impressive, sales will be much more difficult. W by Worth seems to fall into that latter category.
6. Odds of success
My final issue with W by Worth is the most significant one. Simply put, your chances of success don’t seem high. There is too much competition out there and the items aren’t competitive enough.
The company may also be expensive to join and to stay involved in. After all, the items are pricy and you do need to keep some stock.
Unless you absolutely love the clothing from W by Worth, the company doesn’t seem like a good plan. Instead, you’re likely to spend a considerable amount of money and not make much in return.
Whatever type of product you decide to promote, it's VITAL that you generate leads to grow your business.
