There are many reasons why you might want to sell children’s books online. In some cases, parents simply find that they are swamped with old books, ones that their kids have grown out of or don’t care about anymore.
Are You Ready To Work Your Ass Off to Earn Your Lifestyle?
Are you tired of the daily grind? With a laptop and an internet connection I built a small website to generate income, and my life completely changed. Let me show you exactly how I’ve been doing it for more than 13 years.
Alternatively, you might just think that this sounds like a good way to make money. After all, there is always a demand for children’s books and there are plenty of fascinating ones to choose from.
Making Money Selling Children’s Books Online
In this post, we’re taking a look at ways that you can make money selling these books online. The approaches will appeal to different audiences but hopefully at least one of them meets your needs.
Selling Used Children’s Books
There are many different places where you can sell used children’s books online. You’ve probably already thought of the most logical places, such as eBay and Amazon.
eBay often works particularly well if the book you’re selling is somewhat rare. You can also sell in bulk lots, which is perfect if you have many books to clear out and many of them are fairly common.
Amazon can work too, especially as they have such a strong focus on books. However, there are also many dedicated booksellers on Amazon already, including ones that work through Amazon FBA.
It may be tough to get your books sold with so much competition. Besides, if you’re just selling books that you own, eBay is probably easier to work with.
There are also some specialized sites that you can check out, such as BX-Zone.com. Sites like this can be particularly powerful for unusual books, as you are selling to an audience that is specifically interested in this field. However, be aware that specialized sites are typically less popular. This means that you’re promoting to a smaller audience.
You could also combine approaches. For example, you might sell baby products and children’s clothing at the same time.
You’re not just limited to selling your own books either.
Some people choose to make money by purchasing and then reselling books. This works best if you can figure out which books are in demand and find a way to buy them cheaply.
For used books, you can often turn to second-hand stores and garage sales. These places often have underpriced books.
You can then turn a profit by describing them well and selling them online. The main limitation is the amount of legwork involved. Still, this is a way to earn, and, over time, you should develop an eye for which books will be profitable.
Selling Physical Books Through Amazon FBA
If you’re interested in physical children’s books, Amazon FBA could be a viable option. This is a service that Amazon provides and it is designed to streamline the process of selling through Amazon.
The basic idea is that you can sell physical products through Amazon, without having to worry about all the complexities that come with storage, organization, and even shipping.
Instead, the products you are selling are stored in Amazon’s warehouses. Amazon is then responsible for shipping the product out whenever you make a sale.
Amazon FBA has become pretty popular, with many people finding success. But, the strategy does involve risk. After all, you’d normally be purchasing products and then reselling them. If you planned poorly or misread the market, you could easily end up with a large number of children’s books that you simply couldn’t sell.
You can use Amazon FBA to sell new or used books, although either approach takes some planning. It’s important to research the competition first and figure out whether you can make consistent sales at prices that will result in profit.
I would personally suggest being wary about selling books through Amazon FBA. The idea is powerful, which is why so many guides and training videos have focused on using Amazon FBA for books.
Because of this, there is a large amount of competition when it comes to books, more than there is for many other types of products.
Selling Books Through Affiliate Marketing
Another angle is affiliate marketing. This technique allows you to promote products without having any physical books yourself. So, you don’t need to own or purchase any children’s books. Instead, you get to promote books from various retailers.
The most logical affiliate program to use is Amazon. Amazon has a strong focus on books. This includes a wide range of physical books, along with many eBooks for kids. There are far more options than you would find in any local bookstore.
As an affiliate program, Amazon has some key advantages and disadvantages. The main issue is their rates. The amount of commission you earn is fairly low. It’s almost always less than 10% and often less than 5%. Other affiliate programs tend to have higher rates.
But, Amazon does have an extensive product selection and is already trusted. The site is also exceptional at making sales. You’ll often find that if you can just get a person to visit Amazon, they’ll end up buying something – even if the product has nothing to do with what you were promoting.
There are also other more specialized affiliate programs. One example is the site Put Me in the Story, which offers an affiliate commission of 10%. The site is a little unusual, as they offer personalized children’s books.
Another site is Highlights. This one sells various types of products, including books, toys, and magazines. The style might be particularly appealing if you plan to focus on children in general. The site offers between 5% and 15% commission, depending on the type of product being sold.
You can also look for affiliate programs through large companies, such as Barnes & Noble. The availability of such programs varies over time, but it never hurts to check.
Making Sales With Affiliate Marketing
If you’re not familiar with it, affiliate marketing may seem a little strange. But, it is a very effective technique. The biggest benefit is your ability to scale. Because you’re not dealing with any physical products yourself, it is as easy to sell to 100 people as it is to sell to a single person.
The main way to do so is by making your own website. This is actually a pretty simple process and gives you a single location that you can start to develop your own business.
There are many blogs out there that already do just that. A common example would be the so-called mommy blogs. These often focus on a wide range of areas that are related to children and families.
Children’s books might be one area that they focus on and they may also talk about recipes, home remedies, and other related topics.
Such a site presents countless opportunities to recommend products. For example, you’ll sometimes see bloggers make lists of their favorite products of a particular type – like the best blenders for smoothies. Alternatively, they may write reviews on specific items, especially ones that they are passionate about.
You could do something different entirely, like a book review site or one that is just focused on entertaining kids.
In Closing
There are various ways to sell’s children’s books, with affiliate marketing being the lowest risk option. But, regardless of the approach you take, it’s important to plan and seriously consider the risks and your potential for income.
One of the biggest limitations here is probably the type of product. Children’s books are still popular but not nearly as much as they once were. Kids are growing up in houses that are filled with devices – and many parents are taking advantage of eBooks to provide children with cheaper entertainment.
At the same time, many families may not be willing or able to buy children’s books regularly. Kids do tend to grow out of the books fast and many may only get read once or twice. With all of the online options, not to mention libraries, children’s books may be a fairly tough niche to make sales in.
This pattern is also why there are relatively few approaches that you can take to sell children’s books. Realistically, the demand often isn’t there. Unless the books are unusual or rare in some way, you may simply find that you cannot make sales.
That’s not to say it’s impossible. Some people are successful in this field. The affiliate marketing angle also gives you an edge, as you get to choose which books you’re promoting. But, it’s still important that you do your research first and figure out whether the approach is realistic for you.

This is a wonderful blog. I appreciate your honesty in expressing the difficulty of selling children’s books online. I have an eBay business and have tried selling children’s book without any success. Unless they are rare it’s a hard sale. My focus over the last year has been writing two film scripts and several children’s books. The problem I am having is I have an illness and am on disability. So the funding to get my books published or the necessary funding to get an affiliate program up and running isn’t there. But I thought if I had some books published and combined a website selling my books, reviewing other books with links to buy them I might have some success. Really just need someone willing to be a partner on some of my ideas. I applied at a publishing company that funds a book project but am not too excited due to the margin of profit the company takes. If you have any ideas for me please let me know. Would love to share my most recent children’s book with you. Any suggestions for starting an affiliate program is highly appreciated. Have a wonderful day!

I’ll just be honest – I think if you wait for a partner, you’re going to be waiting for a long time. You are doing great so far by taking action, but if you really want to make traction, you are going to need to go solo. Make your books. Sell them on Amazon. Advertise on social media and your own website. It can be done. Many people do it. But you gotta get the work done.
Sounds like you already have a publisher lined up though. I think worrying about the cut they take at this point is not something you should focus on. You have many options available to you, so it’s just a matter of choosing one.
