Company Name: Vollara
What Is It
Once called EcoQuest, Vollara is a MLM that focuses on water and air purification systems as well as a small selection of supplements.
There are concerning things about the products that Vollara offers, enough to make me nervous about the potential in promoting their products. On the opportunity side, Vollara is the same as most other MLMs, placing most of its emphasis on recruitment. This includes complex requirements to progress in the company, meaning that most new distributors are unlikely to succeed.
The air purification aspect is something that the company really emphasizes. The company focuses on the way that the air purifiers can target many types of contaminants that other air purifiers are unable to reach. Specifically, this is a feature of active air purifiers, and other companies do have similar products.
There has been considerable debate about their air purifiers of the company, because their effectiveness comes from the use of ozone. Ozone can be an irritant for many people, especially those who are sensitive to allergens.
In fact, both Canada and California have standards to limit the amount of ozone that air purifiers can emit. Those standards are why the company makes the following note (in small print no less).
Personally, I’d be wary of any product that is actually banned in one state or in Canada. At the same time, Vollara isn’t very open about the use of ozone in its products. For example, in the product sheet for FreshAir Surround, the only mention of ozone is the following note:
That sounds great, but ozone is also the mechanism for how the air purifier actually works. So, you could run it ozone free, but it probably wouldn’t purify the air very much.
The site doesn’t list the price for its products, making it hard to compare them with competitors. Indeed, it doesn’t even seem possible to purchase from the site, and viewers are directed to find a distributor if they want to make a purchase.
The water purification aspect of the company just contains a single product. The water purifier offers the ability to change the pH of the water to suit a range of needs. Of course, the company doesn’t really offer any evidence about whether its product actually offers any health benefits or not, just lots of claims. In fact, all of the hype around the water is really nothing but hype.
As with the air purifiers, finding the pricing information on the product is hard to do. I’ve found a few sites listing it as more than $1,000, but it’s hard to know whether the prices are correct or not.
Once again, the company forces people to go to distributors for pricing (and an intense sales pitch at the same time, no doubt).
Vitamins and Minerals
The final set of products that the company offers are supplements. These are really the only products that most potential purchasers will be able to afford. There is a range of options here, including supplements for vitamins, minerals, digestive enzymes, antioxidants and multiple others.
Just about any supplement out there is going to vary a bit in exactly what it contains. Some of those ingredients may contribute to improved health, but most of them probably don’t.
These differences also make it impossible to compare supplements from one brand to another. With no pricing information and few reviews on the products themselves, it’s hard to know just how these stack up against competing products.
Personally, I’m not particularly impressed.
The marketing claims for the supplements are the same as any other MLM and there is no evidence that the supplements actually do anything. They might still be worth trying, but the problems with the air and water filters from the company suggest that the supplements probably aren’t all that great either.
The Company Itself
With a MLM, your success is strongly related to the company that you are working with. For example, people are much more likely to buy from a company with a good reputation versus one they haven’t heard of.
In the case of Vollara, the reputation of the company is a little confusing. As the video on the site states, the company is part of Aerus Holdings (which used to be called Electrolux). Although, this is because Aerus Holdings acquired Vollara (then called EcoQuest).
All of these name changes mean that most people you are promoting to may not have even heard of the company. Certainly it doesn’t have the brand recognition that companies like Amway or Avon can claim.
In the sales pitch for the opportunity, the company promotes itself as having a strong reputation in the direct selling market.
That’s true for the parent company, because Electrolux did always have a strong emphasis on direct sales. However, that doesn’t necessarily hold true for Vollara itself. Instead, the only real reputation the company has comes from its previous name (Ecoquest) and most of that reputation isn’t good.
Part of the reputation comes from the way that the company’s air purifiers create ozone as a way of cleaning the air.
The company sends people back to distributors to find out about the opportunity, but thankfully some of the information is available online with a little bit of digging. As tends to be the case, distributors for the company get some income from selling products, but most of the income comes from recruiting people into the company.
To make money in the company, you have to meet the basic requirements, which involves meeting 100PQV, which is a measure of the volume that you are purchasing yourself. This means that regardless of how well (or poorly) you are doing with the company, you still have to keep purchasing product every month.
It isn’t clear how much product you have to purchase to meet that volume, but based on other MLMs, I’m guessing that it would be more than $100 per month.
The concept is that you work your way up the ranks in the company. Each rank has more potential for bonuses, but also has more requirements. For example, the second rank requires 1,000 GQV, which is a measure of how many sales you are making (and the people you recruit and so forth).
It only gets more complicated from there and by the fourth rank you have to have multiple active legs of people you recruit and a certain amount of sales in each leg.
This tends to be the pattern for MLMs in general. The further you get in the ranks for the company, the more challenging the requirements are to meet.
This approach also makes it hard to earn money, because the real money comes from being high rank and having many people under you. Getting to that point, well, it isn’t as easy as Vollara would like you to think.
Recruitment and Sales
MLMs operate through direct sales. The idea is that you get out there and promote their products to customers. If you do well, you end up making money. If you do poorly, you might just end up losing money.
Direct sales often sounds easy. After all, you are just trying to convince friends and acquaintances to buy something. In practice though, direct sales is tough. People aren’t willing to part with their money at the best of times and many of them won’t have even heard about the products you are trying to promote.
There’s also competition. Why should people buy from you when they can just go to a store or buy a similar product off an online site? Let’s not forget that you don’t go into Vollara with any direct sales training and the company doesn’t seem to offer a whole lot.
So, you end up trying to figure out how to be successful yourself.
These challenges are similar across most MLMs. In this particular case though, there is also an additional challenge. The challenge comes from the products. Most of the products from this company are expensive and/or purchases that people are only going to make once.
For example, you probably won’t sell two air purifiers to the same person, or two water purifiers. The products are also pretty major investments, so many people probably won’t be able to afford them. This only leaves the supplements that the company offers, which really aren’t that appealing.
These issues limit how easy it is to make multiple sales and mean you have to work on constantly finding new people to sell to. This gets progressively harder as you go along, as you start having to find customers who aren’t already your contacts.
Even if the products from the company were amazing, trying to sell them through a MLM would be a challenging task. Most of the company’s products are ones that people like to put thought and research into before they buy and you are selling from a company that doesn’t exactly have a good reputation. Combined with the complexity of the compensation plan, these factors make earning money quite the challenge.
MLM VS Affiliate Marketing
You might be one of the lucky few who can earn money through a MLM. If so, good for you. But for most people, MLMs are a whole lot of rules and restrictions that hinder your potential to earn money.
My question is always, why go through this?
You can earn money online without having to worry about the challenges of direct selling if you do it through your own website. This approach even lets you promote products that people will actually want to buy, rather than ones that you really have to push to sell.
The greatest thing about this is that making money through a website isn’t nearly as challenging as it sounds and it is something that pretty much anyone can learn with a bit of help. It's also really cheap to start, because your domain costs $11 and companies don't charge you to sell their products!
Whatever type of product you decide to promote, it's important to own your own website to grow your business.
Parties only work if you have a network of friends with money in their pockets. Network marketing only works if your friends are interested in joining business opportunities.
With a website you can reach the entire world, and only promote great products to people interested in what you have to say. Plus, you open up doors to multiple streams of revenue like affiliate sales, ad click revenue, paid advertising, and even selling your own digital products.
