This was a rather interesting site that came across my radar while I was looking for new and better ways to earn money freelance writing.
Are You Ready To Work Your Ass Off to Earn Your Lifestyle?
Are you tired of the daily grind? With a laptop and an internet connection I built a small website to generate income, and my life completely changed. Let me show you exactly how I’ve been doing it for more than 13 years.
But can you really make money writing for Asian Correspondent? This is what I was curious about, so I decided to do some looking into it.
Making Money Writing For Asian Correspondent
The first thing to do is to take a look at the site itself. My initial impression of the site was actually really good.
The landing page was pretty cluttered, but not in the sense that it ruined the reading experience. Plus, I was really impressed by the article headlines that I was seeing.
The stories seemed very relevant to the events that I had been following in the news on my social media, and I found myself legitimately interested in what I was finding.
I am a bit of a news junkie, and make it a point to try to stay informed. So this kind of site is right up my alley!
There were also a few banner ads on the site, but not so many that they were super noticeable.
There were also quite a few tabs along the top of the page that provided a quick means to travel to different pages of the site. Some of these tabs included options like: News, Insights, Travel, Tech, Education, Green, and Trending.
There was also an interesting ‘Country Selection’ button that you could use to filter content by the country it talked about… which was a feature that I liked very much.
I decided to check the About Us page to see if I could learn more about the website… and actually learned quite a few different things. Here is what I found out.
About Asian Correspondent
Here is how the website describes itself on the ‘About Us’ page of their website.
“Asian Correspondent is an independent news source that aims to bring the most important stories in Asia to an international, English-speaking audience.”
This did make sense, because I was actually beginning to wonder why everything was in English if the stories were all about news stories in Asian regions.
They also say that they ‘combine original features from writers and bloggers across Asia with some of the world’s best reporting from the Reuters wires,’ and that their coverage offers insight into ‘politics, media and education from Bangkok to Beijing and brings you stories that rarely make it into English media.’
So yeah. So far so good. But at this point, I was curious about the quality of the articles that they published. So I decided to head back to the landing page to do some reading.
Here is what I discovered.
Checking Out The Quality Of The Content On Asian Correspondent
I went back to the landing page and clicked on couple of different articles… and can say right away that they were extremely well-done. I always love it when websites publish quality content, and Asiancorrespondent.com certainly didn’t disappoint in this regard.
Their content is most definitely news-like. In fact, the overall design of the website is more news-like than blog-like. They also post content very regularly… posting several articles a day instead of just one a day or a couple a week.
Another thing that I really liked about the content was that there were a lot of quality images to accompany the stories. This actually made me wonder if photographs were required as part of the process for submitting articles to the site (the Write For Us page didn’t mention this, but it may still be a part).
If so, then I could definitely see how people who live in the regions being featured could have an advantage over people who don’t live in the area.
Or maybe it was required that the writer live in an Asian region before their work would be accepted?
These were questions that I was becoming increasingly curious about. I was also curious about how much the site paid, and whether or not they were currently looking for freelancers.
My Thoughts On Freelance Writing For News Websites
First off, I will say that freelance writing is most definitely a great way to earn some extra cash. I will also say that I feel like writing for news sites could be better for some writers than for others, dependent mostly on the writer’s particular style and experience.
The good news is that there are a lot of websites hiring freelancers right now. This includes sites that focus on news, such as Sacramento Press, High Ground News and The Diplomat.
But the bad news is that freelance writing is a competitive environment, and if you want to make actual money doing it, you will need to be able to…
- Write professionally and with skill
- Write knowledgeably and with an authoritative voice
- Meet deadlines and pay close attention to details when pitching article ideas
News articles can be especially challenging sometimes if you have never written about the required topic before, because to write for news websites you definitely need to have your facts in order.
So for this website, you would need to be at least kind of a specialist where Asian news is concerned.
When it comes to freelancing in-general, I would definitely say this as well… you need to be pitching to more than one website if you really want your freelancing side-hustle to make you any serious cash.
Whether or not Asian Correspondent becomes one of these sites for you is kind of beside the point where this idea is concerned, because there are literally dozens, if not hundreds, of websites online that will pay freelancers to write content.
But it is also important that you commit yourself to this path if you really want to make it, because writing for websites is not easy.
It can take a lot of time to hear back about your pitches, you will undoubtedly have pitches rejected, and you will also probably find yourself frustrated at some point over the course of the entire ordeal.
So yeah. Succeeding at freelance writing certainly requires a bit of gusto and stick-to-it-iveness.
So the big questions, then, become these.
- Is this the kind of site that you would potentially like to write for?
- Are you committed to going the distance and putting in the work that freelancing requires?
Writing For Asian Correspondent
As it turns out, the ‘Write For Us’ page of this website was a bit smaller than I expected. But here is what it looked like.
I learned some crucial details about the website here, too. Here are the most important points, just to summarize them.
- They say that they are always on the lookout for writers, bloggers, and journalists
- They look for excellent English-language skills and a good news sense
- They are also looking for writers with a sound knowledge of social media platforms
- They are currently only looking for journalists in the following countries to freelance for them: Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam.
This actually told me a lot. They are apparently not looking for freelancers who are not from one of the above-listed countries, so if you don’t live in one of these locales, you may be a bit out of luck for this one.
But… if you do happen to live in one of these places and would like to try pitching something to this site, their email address is clearly listed on their ‘Write For Us’ site, and contacting them is pretty easy.
My Personal Feelings About Writing For AsianCorrespondent.com
I think that this could be an awesome website to write for… but there are obviously some limitations that would keep any writers from Europe, Canada, or the US from writing for them. But for writers who do live in one of the listed countries, I feel like this could be a really awesome opportunity.
I really did like the site. I feel like it has a lot to offer, both as a news site and as a website that potential freelancers could pitch to.
I do not think that writing for a website like this is going to make any writer rich. But then again, that is not really the point. No website that you write for is going to make you rich. But websites like this can help you to realize your dream of writing content and getting paid for it, especially if you pitch to quite a few at once.
So yeah. This is a pretty cool site, and I feel like I will probably be back to read it at least… even though I am not qualified to write for it because I do not live in one of the listed countries.
If I did live in one of those countries, though, I would most definitely give it a shot!
