I found this website and was instantly interested in it… mostly because of the interesting name. Who would ever think that a website with a name like this could ever make you any extra money?
Well, I decided to take a look at it, and it actually seemed pretty interesting. But can you really make money with the Gift Card Granny Website?
Making Money With The Gift Card Granny Website
This website was all about the gift cards. But I wasn't quite sure what to make of it until I did a bit of looking around. As it turns out, it was a lot different than I imagined it would be… but that turned out to be a good thing.
Here is what we found out.
Getting Started With Gift Card Granny: What Is It?
Right away, the landing page tells us a lot about what this website actually has to offer. Here are three different options that we see right away…
- Save on gift cards: Buy discount gift cards before you shop, and save.
- Sell gift cards: Get the best offer when you sell your gift cards.
- Reward with gift cards: Recognize or incentivize your employees and clients.
Ok. So I could already see some possible value being offered here. You can apparently buy gift cards at a discount on Gift Card Granny (found at GiftCardGranny.com), which is pretty cool.
But they also mention selling gift cards… so I was not sure if this site was all about resale gift cards, or if it was a place where companies could sell gift cards at a discounted price, or what the actual deal was.
So I decided to do a bit of looking around in a couple of these categories. Here is what I found.
Discount Gift Cards
Ok so here, I found a huge list of businesses that apparently offer gift cards at discounts. You can see to the left that different categories supposedly offer some pretty major discounts… but I was still a bit skeptical.
What kinds of gift cards could I get in my area that I could actually use? This was the real question that I wanted answered, so I did a quick search for gift cards that I might be likely to use in my local area. Searching was pretty easy, thanks to the intuitive interface on the site.
I also discovered that you earn ‘Granny Awards’ when you buy from stores that are specially marked… and when you accrue enough points, you can redeem them for free gift cards, so that is pretty awesome.
But as far as gift cards were concerned, here are just a few that I found…
- $25 Walmart gift cards for $23.75
- $25 Hot Topic gift cards for $22.99
- $25 Cold Stone Creamery gift cards for $18.46
And so on and so on.
I mean, there is a bit of work involved here, in the sense that you are pretty much trying to find not only the gift cards that you want, but you are also trying to find the options that are going to give you the best deals, etc.
But, there is also an added element of complexity here, because the cards are not actually being offered for sale on Gift Card Granny.
Rather, you are taken to third party websites when you click on the ‘view deal’ button. But, with that being said, these other websites really seem to be pretty awesome. They don’t seem sketchy to me.
The Cold Stone Creamery cards, for example, were actually being sold by a company called Raise.com. This company was only one of the many that were listed on Gift Card Granny, though.
GiftCardGranny.com seems to be a massive nexus that not only brings all of these cool companies together in one place, but that also gives you the ability to search through them.
You can even search for physical or e-gift cards, which is more than a little bit nifty.
I quickly noticed that these sites seemed to be re-selling gift cards for people. That actually makes sense, because sometimes, people get gift cards as gifts that they never really intend to use.
So if you can sell these cards and even get a bit of cash out of them, that is sometimes better than going to the trouble of trying to use them.
At first I was confused about this site, because I wondered how this profited the companies who issued the shopping cards at all. But then I realized that it does not seem like the companies are selling their own gift cards here. These gift cards are being sold by consumers who want cash for the gift cards instead.
This made me wonder about the selling process. So that’s what I checked out next.
Selling Gift Cards On Gift Card Granny
Selling gift cards on GiftCardGranny.com is pretty cool actually. You enter the brand of the card and the remaining amount, and then click on a ‘get offers’ tab to see what you can make on it. You then have three basic options. You can either…
- Sell it now, to a top gift-card site, to get paid less, but faster
- Name your price, to maximize your earnings. But using this option, you don’t get paid until the gift card is sold and delivered.
- Or Trade it in. This is said to get you the best value. It is essentially where you trade your gift card in for a different gift card.
So yeah. I was pretty impressed with all of this. I didn’t have much of a problem with anything that I was seeing here. It all seemed straight-forward, and sounded like a good idea.
I’m surprised that I have never heard of this before. But yeah. This is a thing that exists, and Gift Card Granny makes the process of buying discount gift cards (or selling gift cards) pretty easy and user-friendly.
History Of The Company
I did a bit of research about this company, and learned some cool stuff on their website. They were founded in 2009, and were originally formulated to be a gift-card comparison site.
But since then, they’ve grown from a single-person operation to a company with almost 40 employees. And now, they are the largest discount gift card website online.
They broker over 400,000 gift card deals a year for over 18 million visitors.
What Did I Think Of The Gift Card Granny Website?
Personally, I was surprised by this site. I imagined that it was going to be some kind of survey site where you just win points that you can spend on gift cards. But it ended up being a lot cooler than that.
This website does not necessarily qualify as a side hustle, mostly because you cannot make huge amounts of money off of it unless you have huge and limitless numbers of gift cards to sell.
But… you can save some pretty serious money with this site by purchasing gift cards that you would use at a discount, and then using them to buy what you want.
I can already see how I could use Gift Card Granny to save quite a bit on some expenditures that I was already planning on making.
The site is not without its downsides, of course. For one, it is a bit time consuming to use it. Yes, I could go to all of the trouble of buying a Walmart gift card that will save me 5%… but will the time spent be worth the savings?
I might opt to make a personal rule for myself regarding this. Maybe, for example, I won’t buy any cards that don’t help me save 10% or more, etc. Or, I could buy cards in bulk, or only buy larger cards to make better use of the discounts, etc.
These are all methods that you could use to help lessen the impact of wasted time.
Technically speaking, the site performed very well. I never experienced a glitch or a failure to load a screen, or anything like that.
As far as aesthetics go, I liked the simplicity of the site. Purple and white make the colors, tabs, and lettering easy to see and read, so that was a good thing.
Is This Site Going To Make You A Ton Of Cash?
No. But that’s not really what it’s meant to do. You can sell your unused gift cards here, or you can buy discounted gift cards from other people, and Gift Card Granny is the nexus that makes this possible.
It is a veritable world trading center for gift cards… and we were actually rather impressed.
This will save/make you small amounts of money in the long run, but it is a site that lets you buy discounted gift cards to businesses you will actually use. And for that reason, we found it to be quite cool!
