To be completely honest, I wasn’t exactly sure what this app was supposed to do when I first looked at it. But, it was supposedly an app that I could use to earn some extra cash with, and judging from the title, it sounded like it was some kind of secret shopper type of thing. But can you really make money with the iSecretShop App?
This is what I was determined to find out, and so I downloaded it and decided to try it out for myself to figure that out.
Secret shopping has always been a thing. So I was interesting in finding out exactly how this app went about it. I have personally never been a secret shopper before… but hey, there's a first time for everything, right?
But first, let’s talk about the basic Google Play information.
As you can see, the app operates with the tagline ‘Get Paid To Shop.’ It has over 50,000 downloads, and a Google Play Rating of 3.6 stars.
I looked at the Read More section of the app listing to find out more about it, and found this.
Ok, after reading this, I had a much better idea of how this app helps you to earn extra cash. Pretty much, you are becoming a secret shopper and providing feedback to businesses in exchange for payment.
So at this point, I opened up the app and gave it a try. Here is what I found.
Opening Up The iSecretShop App For The First Time
Opening up the app for the first time brought me to a screen where I could either sign in or register. I obviously needed to register before I could sign in, so that’s what I did. There was quite a bit of information that I needed to fill out to make this happen, but it was complete in one to two minutes, so not bad.
After that, I went back to the sign in screen and signed in without a problem. This brought me to what appeared to be the ‘main hub’ of the app. It was pretty simply lied out, with large yellow files, or ‘tabs' spread around it. You could click on the different tabs to get to different parts of the app.
There were A LOT of different tabs. Here is the list…
- My profile
- Extended profile
- Opinion polls
- Available shops
- Assigned shops
- Web and phone shops
- Iss Website
- Iss TOU
- Ticket system
- Iss Videos
Ok, so a lot of different tabs… but it sounds like the most important ones are located near the top. Near some of the tabs, in the upper right hand corner of the little yellow squares that you clicked on to enter them, there were some red circles with numbers inside of them.
This was the number of options that were waiting for you within each tab… which was really nice. This showed me, right away, how many opportunities I had in each tab before I even opened them up.
For example… I had 0 Available Shops near me. But… I had 8 different Web and Phone Shop options in that tab. So that’s what I clicked on next.
Figuring Out How To Secret Shop With The iSecretShop App
I clicked on the Web and Phone shops tab, and was greeted with this screen.
I will admit that I did not see what I imagined I would see here. There were a number of jobs available, but they were for businesses that I would not have expected to see. The first option was this one. I clicked on the listing to get a better look, and here is what that actually looked like…
This was very interesting. You can’t see the entire job description in the above screen shot, so here is the second half of it, scrolled down.
Ok, so as you can see, you literally need to call the company and go through this procedure to complete the ‘shop.’
Basically, you make the phone call, do what the description asks, and then rate different aspects of the experience on a scale of 0 to 5. If anything is below a 5, you provide a description for why… and then you submit the report, and if you did it right, you will get paid $5 for it.
I decided to look at other listings to see if the work-to-payment ratio was about the same for each. And it was. All of the jobs like this that I looked at paid $5, which is pretty cool.
But now, I had a bigger question to ask myself. Was $5 worth the work that you had to do to complete these ‘shopping trips?’ That is what I contemplated next as I read through the jobs and examined what needed to be done to earn the cash.
Is The Money Worth The Work In The iSecretShop App?
Ok, so it is really important to me that I make enough money for my time to make it ‘worth my while,’ so to speak, with apps like this. I want to make extra cash, but I don’t want to throw my time away for measly amounts of money, either. So, the big question here, is this…
Does iSecretShop pay you enough to make the work worthwhile?
For the phone shopping jobs, you have to make a phone call. So you can do this from anywhere, really… and you have to ask some questions and then spend some time recording your experiences. I can’t really imagine this taking more than 20 minutes. I mean, I guess it could… but I just feel like it probably wouldn’t take much longer than that.
So you get paid $5 for about 20 minutes’ worth of work. That comes out to about $15 an hour. To be honest, that isn’t too bad. I have seen a lot of apps (survey apps are especially bad about this) where you are expected to take 20 minute surveys for a dollar or less… so yeah, in the grand scheme of things, this app does a pretty good job of paying you for your time.
Plus, I like that, with the web and phone secret shopping missions, you don’t really have to leave your house or go anywhere special. You could do the entire thing from your smart phone.
You do have to ‘apply’ for the jobs, kind of… and if you get them, I assume that you get a notification and that the jobs go to the Assignments tab.
How Do You Get Your Money On The iSecretShop App?
I clicked on the Payments tab, located on the main hub, to see if there was any extra information there to look into—but since I haven’t made any money, I didn’t have any options to do anything there. But… in the registration process, you do have to provide your PayPal email… so, it would seem that you can withdraw your money to PayPal when the times comes to do so, which is pretty cool with me.
Don’t get me wrong, I am fine with gift cards, as long as I can get gift cards to places I like. But nothing really beats PayPal as far as I’m concerned!
Will I Be Keeping iSecretShop installed on my phone?
I may actually give this one a try. There are a lot of upsides to this app, though there are also some downsides.
The main upsides? Well, it does pay out pretty good, it has good reviews, it works well, and you can use it from anywhere thanks to the opportunities for web and phone shopping trips.
The downsides? There are not a ton of secret shopping opportunities in all areas. So, you won’t be able to use this app to earn a huge bonus income or anything.
For a bit of extra cash, iSecretShop seems to work very well.
I liked how the app looked, and while I did find the main hub a little bit difficult to navigate (all of the Tabs kept things in order, but it was still maybe not as organized as a nice drop down menu), but all in all, the look and style of the app was fine with me.
If you don’t have a PayPal account, you will need to create one before you use the iSecretShop App. As that seems to be the only way that you can withdraw your funds. But… I liked that about the app too, because PayPal is really my favorite way to receive the money I’ve made.
Our Final Thoughts About The iSecretShop App
Should you download it and use it on your phone?
Honestly, when you calculate the time spent trying to make money with apps, it rarely works out to be more than a few dollars per hour. Most of the time, you'll only make a few dollars per month. Personally, I think my time is worth more than that!
That's why in 2010 I learned how to make my own website and earn money through online advertising. After a few months of working on my website I was earning consistent income and within two years I was generating over $10,000 per month.
The same training I used to start earning online, passive income is currently open to new members. The beginner course is FREE, and if you join through my link, I will be available for personal support as you build your own business.
