Hi, and welcome to Day 2!
Not all money made on the internet is through internet marketing, but this is what I will be teaching you.
At Wealthy Affiliate there are actually several types of online income that you can dig into deeper. Internet marketing is the easiest one to get started with, and it's the one I’ll cover in these next couple days. It's also the subject of the free Online Entrepreneur Certification Course available to all members inside the community.
Internet marketing in its most basic form, is matching a product and a buyer on the internet.
Here’s what I mean.
When you want to buy something, typically you do a search in a search Engine like Yahoo!, Bing, or most notably, Google (when I refer to Google from now on, I mean search engines in general because most people use Google).
Then, hopefully, Google gives us some websites that feature a product or service we’re looking for.
For example, I want to buy a Harley Davidson motorcycle. I’m going to need a helmet, so I went to Google today and typed “Harley style motorcycle helmets”.
Google showed me websites with helmets that were described at “Harley style”.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find one I liked. I found out that this is not really the correct term, and I should be searching for “half helmets”, so instead I typed “half helmets with Harley Davidson logos”.
That search turned up a different set of results. I found some I liked, but discovered that I liked the helmets that have a leather layer on the outside, so I then searched for “real leather half helmets with Harley Davidson logo”.
I couldn’t find any! Do they exist? I don’t know!
What’s the point?
Do you think if YOU had a website with a page called “Real Leather Half Helmets With a Harley Davidson Logo” that I would buy one from you?
You don’t actually have to own a helmet-selling business, you just need to make a website featuring pictures and text about the product, then link to a business that has the product in stock. When I make a purchase, you get paid a commission.
That’s how internet marketing works.
You help buyers find the products they’re looking for.
But sometimes, what people are looking for is information, not a product.
Let’s look at one more example.
Last year I started learning about stocks and I wanted to take a course on the internet.
So I typed into Google, “Online courses learn stock investing”, and that turned up quite a few results – way too many for me to decide.
I then modified my search to “Best online courses for beginners learning to invest in stocks”.
That turned up a couple reviews which I read, and eventually followed the advice of a blogger who had taken some courses before.
He probably got paid a commission!
There are thousands and thousands of companies out there that will pay you to simply write about their products or services.
The most difficult thing about internet marketing is not finding someone to pay you. There are so many. The difficult part is just matching the correct product with an enthusiastic buyer.
So by now, you’ve probably got a good idea of what internet marketing is all about. Even if there are still some questions, it’s OK, let’s do just one puzzle piece at a time.
Next, let’s take a look at what an internet marketer does to make money online.
Step 1: Keyword Research
Find words that people are searching for in high volume. Compare that with the general level of competition (other websites). Find phrases that are grammatically correct, and are terms people use when they’re looking to buy (as opposed to just general research).
Step 2: Find an Affiliate program
This is how you make your money. You need to find an established company that will pay you to help them make sales. I go over this in my How-To Videos, and this is covered in detail in the WA Online Entrepreneur Level 1 Certification Course. Sometimes there are many companies competing for your help!
Step 3: Build a Website
This may seem scary to someone who’s never done it before, but getting a basic website set up is actually pretty easy these days. In fact, you can do it in 30 seconds with Wealthy Affiliates website builder.
Step 4: Research and Create Content
You need to provide people with helpful information. We’re not making an Amazon showcase here! By providing people with useful, unique content, you gain authority on the internet. Authority means better ranking in search engines, which means more visitors, more sales, and more money!
Step 5: Expand & Promote
Once you’ve got the core website up, the work doesn’t stop there. To promote your website on the internet you can create video, share pictures, write articles, answer questions, participate in forums, have your own podcast, guest blog on other peoples websites, and tons more stuff.
If you’ve chosen a good ‘niche’, then you can essentially make one website the source of all your income.
Step 6: Rinse and Repeat
Generally speaking, the first site we make isn’t going to be a huge money maker. But now we’ve got a bit of experience under our belts, and we’re ready to do better this time.
We can attack more competitive keywords with our superior writing skills, or find some low hanging fruit and juggle a couple different sites at once.
We’ll go over some other money making strategies in Day 4, but one thing a lot of people do is instead of waiting for residual income to trickle in, they sell their money-making websites for a large lump-sum profit!
So now you know how internet marketing works, and you know what an internet marketer does.
Exciting stuff right?
Don’t feel bad if some of the terms and concepts I mentioned here weren’t 100% clear to you. The goal of this course isn’t to be an expert in 5 days, but to construct a broad framework in your mind. As I mentioned before, your “action” training starts in the free Online Entrepreneur Certification Course over at Wealthy Affiliate.
Tomorrow we’ll take a look at some of the scams that are out there, and how to identify and protect yourself from “gurus” that are just out to make a quick buck off you. We’ll continue to dig into some online business models in Day 4.
Tasks For Today:
Task 1: Think back to the last product or service you purchased on the internet. How did you find it? What was your thought process? Were you able to find the information you were looking for?
Task 2: Write down 3 hobbies or interests you have, and list a couple of paid products or services related to them. I told you my new hobby is going to be motorcycles. Do you dive or enjoy gardening? Are video games, computers, or fashion some of your passions?
Task 3: Watch this video in Wealthy Affiliate about Choosing Your Niche.
PS. There's a lot of internet scams out there. In fact, it's the topic of tomorrow's lesson. After writing hundreds of reviews on One More Cup of Coffee, I know internet scams inside and out. I want to talk about some of their secrets, and how it's possible that they are able to deceive so many people with low-quality, sometimes ILLEGAL products!
If you've ever bought or researched any “make money” or “biz op” products, you MUST read tomorrow's lesson. It's all about S-C-A-M-S!
