What Is It?
ItWorks is an Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) company that sells beauty and health related products such as body wraps, gels and diet supplements. The company was founded in 2001 by Mark and Cindy Pentecost and is well-known for its most popular product, which is a body wrap.
Although ItWorks is an MLM based company, they seem to be doing well as far as distributor incomes. They are the leading seller of body wraps in the country and their top distributors are making more money than any other MLMs I’ve reviewed on this site. (I know somebody selling them)
ItWorks offers about a dozen different products in the health and beauty niche. These products range from dietary supplements, to gels and body wraps. There are a number of MLMs that offer practically identical product lines. So in this respect ItWorks is nothing special. You can take a look at Shaklee, Monavie or do a quick Google search and you'll see that MLMs with health/beauty products are a dime-a-dozen.
Ultimate Body Applicator
The Ultimate Body Applicator is the first and most successful product in the ItWorks line. It’s a body wrap that users can place on any part of the body where they want to lose a few inches.
The wrap is also the source of some controversy. For many years the wraps were said to help people lose weight. That’s not entirely true. The wraps work to help people lose inches.
The ingredients in the wraps — along with a balanced diet and exercise routine — work to supposedly absorb excess water weight that’s held in the body’s fat cells.
They don’t assist with ‘weight loss' in any way. With all that said, body wraps are huge and growing trend.
The body wrap receives mixed reviews. Some claim the product simply does not work. Others counter, saying that users not experiencing results are most likely misusing the product.
The Ultimate Body Applicator (the body wrap) sells retail for $99 but available for $59 for customers signed up for the It Works! loyalty program.
Supplements & Gels
The ItWorks line of dietary supplements helps with a range of common health issues. They offer anything from daily vitamins to metabolism boosters. However, their most-sold items are the beauty products. Besides the body wraps, these come in the form of gels.
The gels, like the wraps, can be applied to any area of the body. They make specific gels and creams for the face and hands. The prices range from about $99 to $29, depending on the product.
Other nutrition companies offering similar products sell them at a comparable price. GNC, for example, has many varieties of “Greens” that retail for around $50.00. Pharmaceutical stores, such as Walgreens or CVS, have their own versions of these products for much less (around $20.00).
The difference seems to be that ItWorks prides itself on offering 100% organic products. Whereas places like department stores and pharmacies do not. Distributors for ItWorks get a 40% discount on all products.
ItWorks has several ways you can earn by selling their products. They offer you some help with marketing materials and a website. If you’re interested in turning ItWorks into a viable home business you need to become a distributor.
For $99 you can sign up to be a distributor for ItWorks. This gives you a starter pack which includes a few wraps and gels, access to a back office (where you can track sales) and some basic training literature.
For an additional $20 per month ItWorks will give you a website that you can send potential customers and distributors to. Unfortunately the website is what's known as a ‘replicated website' and it's nothing special. It is identical to all the others ItWorks websites, which means you won't have any advantage over other distributors.
It seems that distributors who become successful with ItWorks products create their own websites and marketing plans.
Distributors are ranked in nine categories, ranging from “distributor” through “emerald,” all the way up to “ambassador diamond.” About 75% of their employees fall under the “distributor” rank. They average an income of about $752 for the year.
A middle rank distributor, (emerald) makes up about 2% of all ItWorks members. They average about $5600 per year. Their top level distributors, (ambassador diamond) makes up about 0.02% of members. But they can expect to earn a whopping $586,000 per year.
The company has a “B” rating with the Better Business Bureau. Which is better than most MLMs. They also have 4 stars on Glass Door, a review site. Many distributors say they make hundreds a month and have been able to quit their full-time job after a solid year of selling
Don’t get me wrong, there are some complaints.
The biggest problem I see with ItWorks is the same problem I see with most MLMs — More than 99% of the distributors don't make enough money in one year to live on for one week. That's a big problem.
Sure some folks are making a great money, but they are the exception, not the rule. And every time it's the distributors with large networks that make that type of money. That's why MLM is also known as “network marketing”.
Basically that means you need a large network of friends, family and business contacts who follow you know matter what business you're in.
MLM vs Affiliate Marketing
What limits MLM newbies (those without large networks) is the limitations placed on them by the companies themselves. When you sell products for an MLM you are strictly prohibited from selling any other products on your website, or under your name.
Unless you are a well-known expert in that specific industry it almost guarantees your failure and this is part of the reason the MLM industry is so heavily criticized. Or at the very least creates a prolonged period of time before you reach an income you can live on. When you factor that in, with all the costs associated with MLM there's now way a new marketer has a chance.
Affiliate marketing is different. It allows you to sell any product you want, no matter what.
Affiliate marketing is about monetizing your passions. The best part is, you're not limited to any one product or group of products.
With affiliate marketing you can literally sell every product you can think of. It's as simple as signing up for the affiliate programs where the product is sold. Or, often they are sold by companies like Amazon, which covers all its products in its affiliate program. It doesn't matter of companies are competing. YOU decide which products are good enough to promote.
How much does it cost to join an affiliate program? Nothing. No recurring fees, no product subscriptions, no parties to throw.
And you can join as many affiliate programs as you want. That's not something you can do in MLM. As you can probably tell, I love affiliate marketing. And that's because it has changed my life, and it's what I do for a living. Before I started as an affiliate I had no clue how to make money online.
Whatever type of product you decide to promote, it's VITAL that you generate leads to grow your business.
But let's face it, "parties" are boring, and no one likes the annoying Facebook friend who's always promoting a biz-op.
That's why I use this lead generation system. Learn how to generate leads outside of your circle of friends and family and discover what it means to truly own your own business, rather than just be a cheerleader for one network marketing company.
