Unless you have been under an internet marketing rock you already know that video marketing is one of the most powerful ways of getting top rankings and to get traffic to any site.
If fact iMediaConnection predicts that 90% of all web traffic will be reached through video by 2014.
But like all marketing if the SEO is not done correctly all your hard work creating your videos can go to waste.
So with that in mind I would like to share with you the must do's for video SEO, plus a few other tips.
Keep in mind none of the information below will do you any good unless you have first done your keyword research.
1) Video Title
YouTube allows you have 100 characters (max) for your title, but only only 70 characters are displayed in SERPs.
You want your video title to be your main keyword phrase. Your titles should be descriptive and cause people to take action – and that action is to watch your video.
So for example: How To Set Up A Website For Free – And Do It In Less Than 30 Seconds!
The first part of the title is the keyword phrase How To Set Up A Website For Free and the second part And Do It In Less Then 30 Seconds! is an enticement to get people to watch the video.
Be creative – your goal is to get people to watch your video – boring and plain video titles just won't cut it.
2) Video Description
Your description can be up to 5,000 characters long. However only the first 157 characters of the description will be displayed in search engine results pages (SERPs).
You want the URL of your site to be the first part of your description this way it shows in the SERP's and people can see it. You need to include the HTTP:// to make the link active.
So for example
http://www.netwiseprofits.com Hey this is Leo in this short video I'm going to show you ….
Include your main keyword phrase and as many other primary keyword terms as you can within your description.
But like all great content do so naturally. Yes this is the place where you have the most space to add keywords but a great description is the goal – NOT keyword stuffing – this will do you no good so don't even think about doing it.
At the end of each description I also place my main key word phrase as well as the URL link of the video. This way if anyone scrapes my video I get a free back-link.
YouTube tags have a 127 character limit. By adding tags it organizes your videos within YouTube.
Again this is another place you can add even more targeted keywords and long-tail keyword phrases to your video.
This is not the place to go crazy either, having a laundry list of keywords is not going to do you any good. Personally I don't have anymore then 5 or 6 tags.
Of course make sure one of your tags is the title of your video as it is your main keyword phrase.
TIP: I always have the same keyword tag in all my related niche videos.
Because it now links all my videos together with this one keyword.
So when my video appears after someone has done a keyword search for it – all my other videos will appear in the Related Video area that shows on the right hand side of YouTube.
4) External Annotations
The goal with videos is to get people off of YouTube and to your site and you can do this with External Annotations. External annotations are clickable links you can have right inside your video.
So let's say you have a service and you want people to go to your site – you can simply have within your video a call to action such as Click Here For Your Free One-on-One Consultation
When people click that link your video will pause a new browser window will open they will go to your site.
NOTE: You can only link to what is called your Associated Website – so you cannot link to an affiliate site or elsewhere.
I did a training video on how to set up your External Annotations feature for YouTube – Click Here to watch that video
5) Custom Thumbnails
A thumbnail is a screen shot of your video and it what's used for the image of your video – this is what's seen on your channel and in the SERP's.
When you upload your video YouTube will automatically pick 3 thumbnails for your video for you to choose from. These are not always the best choices.
So take advantage of costume thumbnails. This is another place you can use to get entice people to click and watch your video.
Using any graphics editor such as Photo-shop or Fireworks simply can create your own thumbnail and upload that.
Include your title and other content as well as graphics that will stand out and prompt people to click and watch your video.
Using the title example from earlier I quickly created a custom thumbnail I could use:
Make sure your thumbnail is the same size as your video dimensions.
For HD videos that's 1280 x 720
6) Social Media
Simply put share your videos through your social channels. YouTube makes is easy for you to share your videos with the different share options they have – take advantage of that.
7) Video Length
People have very short attention spans so you need to keep that in mind. You don't want to create long videos – try and keep your videos under 2 1/2 minutes.
The research also shows that videos under 1 1/2 minutes have the highest retention. If you can create your videos in this time frame do so.
The majority of my videos I use for marketing are less then a 1 1/2 minutes. In one of my niches I have an average view rate pf 1 minute 16 seconds giving me a 69.9% retention rate. And because of this my traffic and my earnings are growing each and every month.
Here's a screen shot of my traffic growth for one of my niche websites as of today July 3rd. I only started in this niche in November of 2012 and I started earning in March.
All traffic to this site is generated just by videos.
Also YouTube keeps track of the retention rate of your videos – a good retention rate helps with your rankings. You can find your Audience Retention under the Analytics section of your YouTube channel.
8) Play Lists
Creating playlists within your YouTube channel is something you do not want to overlook. The reason is videos within a playlist can show up in the SERP's as well as in YouTube results pages plus as an individual video.
If you SEO'ed your video and your playlist correctly you can actually have your video show up in 2 different places at that same time within YouTube – once in the results and once in the playlist itself. Now cool is that!!
Also if someone is viewing your playlist once that video stops another video automatically starts playing so you now have the opportunity of having people see other videos that they may have not ever seen.
Your playlists should be set up around a common theme – and you should also optimize your playlists.
The playlist name should include at least one of your main keywords in all of your individual playlist names.
And the playlist description is just like the description you create for your videos – so again use keywords within your description about that particular playlist.
Hope you found this information helpful.
