When it comes to getting a job or making money, experience is one of the biggest challenges. For that matter, experience often ends up being a major paradox. In particular, you tend to need a job to earn experience but you need experience to get that job.
To make matters worse, the employment market isn’t particularly good right now. This makes it even more challenging to find a decent job, especially if you don’t have much experience.
The main exception to that rule is jobs that don’t involve much skill. So, you can normally find an entry-level position, even if you have no experience whatsoever. But, this often isn’t a great solution, especially if you’re looking for something with growth potential.
A good way around the problem of experience is to make money online. There are multiple legitimate techniques for doing so, although some are more powerful than others. Nevertheless, most don’t require any experience whatsoever. For that matter, you can normally teach yourself the skills you need to be successful.
As someone that actually started off in my bedroom doing research and now own several successful, money-generating websites, I know for a fact that you can start out online with no experience, and slowly work your way up the food chain.
Being Your Own Boss Online
With a typical job, you need experience because somebody is employing you. As such, you normally have to impress them and prove that you can do the job. But, when you make money online, you’re typically not working for anybody else. Instead, you get to be your own boss. You don't have to impress anyone, and can be 100% honest with yourself about what you're good at, and what you're not.
The advantages of this are easy to see.
When you work for yourself, you have much more control. This includes the ability to set your own schedule and to decide exactly what areas to focus on.
At the same time, you’re not going to get fired because somebody else has better skills or more experience than you. Instead, you can simply take the time to learn what you need to know or outsource tasks that you don’t have the expertise for.
Nevertheless, there are disadvantages to this idea as well. For example, having no set schedule isn’t always good if you struggle to motivate yourself. Likewise, working online isn’t can be fairly isolating and you end up seeing relatively few people.
Still, even with those limitations, the online environment works perfectly for people that have little experience or who struggle with a traditional job.
Personally, I chose this direction because I was overseas and looking for a more reliable source of income. Now, I couldn’t imagine living without the flexibility of working for myself and having the chance to take my job wherever I go.
Another HUGE advantage is that you can slowly learn the skills you need to be “good” at working online. I started out taking a few online courses, watching just a couple videos a day and doing the tasks. It was tough, but after a couple months, I was doing quite well. In six months, my websites were generating income.
The ability to work at your own pace and grow according to your natural enthusiasm is really is a good option for many people and situations. The pressure of having someone breath down your neck is what really peeved me about regular jobs. Now that I'm breathing down my own neck, I don't mind it so much!
Different Ways To Work For Yourself Online
Making money online is actually a huge field and it can seem overwhelming fast. For one thing, there are countless sites out there that promote different ways to earn income.
First, Avoiding These Scams
In some cases, these ideas may be legitimate but they often aren’t. Instead, there are many scam sites that try to get you to spend money on a product or a service that never lives up to its claims.
For example, some sites promote an idea called binary options trading. In doing so, they offer you ‘amazing’ software that’s supposed to guarantee that you make money. It doesn’t, of course. Instead, people often up thousands of dollars out of pocket and have few options for getting that back from the shell company in Cypress they sent it to.
At the same time, there are other sites that let you earn money but you’re getting paid at an extremely low rate. Survey sites are one example of this. That type of site has you filling out surveys and completing other small tasks to make money.
And, the idea works, kind of. You do earn money, although it’s typically no more than $20 or $30 a month. Additionally, the time involved in doing so is considerable. As a result, you’re often earning far below the minimum wage. There are also other challenges, like errors in the system or times where you get screened out of a survey.
For that matter, most sites that have you completing low skill tasks (like surveys, data entry and watching videos) tend to pay very little indeed. They might be okay if you just want some pocket money, but, they’re a waste of time if you’re actually looking for income.
Legitimate Options For Making Money
As the examples above suggest, there are many choices for making money that simply don’t work. In fact, I’d say that there are far more scam sites out there than there are legitimate ones.
Still, making money online isn’t impossible, even for people with no experience.
Many legitimate techniques basically come down to selling either products or services. For example, one common technique is to buy products at a low price and then resell them on sites like Amazon and eBay. As such, people make money selling used books, board games, clothing and many other items.
This idea is popular simply because so many people shop online. At the same time, the income potential is certainly there, providing you do your research and find a good place to get the products from.
There are even services to make the idea easier. One such option is Amazon FBA. With this, you get to take advantage of Amazon’s warehouses and systems. Basically, you ship products to them and Amazon deals with storing and sending the items to customers when you make a sale.
Amazon FBA significantly reduces the workload involved in selling products and means you don’t have to worry about physically storing them. Still, the underlying process is the same with or without Amazon FBA.
Selling products does work for some people but it is also a risky idea. After all, you have to buy the items first and then turn around and sell them. This means that there is a chance you won’t be able to sell some items. For that matter, poor planning or bad luck could easily mean you end up in debt.
You can also make products and sell them, including handicrafts and digital products like eBooks. The risk in doing this may be lower, especially if your costs aren’t significant. I highly recommend trying to write your own ebook and selling in Kindle or a digital distributor if you have deep knowledge of a subject and want to help others learn about it.
Freelancing online is another option that can work for some people. With this, you’re basically selling your services. To do so effectively, you need to be able to find clients who want what you do and will pay a reasonable amount.
Whether or not this is feasible really depends on your skills. For example, freelance writing is a common way to get started online. It's a very busy space, with lots of competition, but also lots of opportunity for enthusiastic writers that can deliver high quality content.
Freelancing tends to involve less risk than selling products, partly because you don’t have to buy items or materials. Nevertheless, you do have to directly deal with clients, which can be frustrating, especially as people are sometimes unreasonable or unpredictable.
Additionally, freelancing ends up being difficult to scale up. In many cases, freelancers find that they can increase their fees but only by a little bit at a time. As a result, the main way to earn more money is to take on more clients. Doing so comes with its own challenges and means that your income is always going to be strongly tied to your clients and specific orders. You still are you own boss because you get to pick and choose who you work with, but you still are beholden to deadlines and project restrictions.
How I Started Online With No Experience: Affiliate Websites
The main option that I want to highlight for making money is having your own website. With a website, you have a single place where you can consolidate your efforts. The site is also something you can develop and refine as time goes on. It's like a piece of digital real estate you have 100% control over.
There are various ways to make money from a site and you can even sell products on there – once you got enough traffic. But, the most powerful method is an idea called affiliate marketing, which I’ll come back to in a little bit.
Another way is to host advertising on your site. You can do this via Google Adsense or a similar program (and there are many options). Ads tend to be popular among site owners because the approach seems like such an easy way to make money.
And, in some ways it is. Beyond the initial setup, you don’t have to interact with your ads much and you don’t have to tailor your writing towards them.
Building An Affiliate Marketing Business
A little-known way to make money online is affiliate marketing, which also relies on building a site. This really is a perfect match for anybody wanting to make money without experience.
Out of all the methods that I’ve discussed, affiliate marketing is the one that best suited to beginners. Why is is so great for beginners with no experience?
- low money risk (no need to purchase inventory)
- low time risk (you can start slow, just writing a few articles per week)
- not much to learn (your basic job is writing articles)
- low barrier to entry (no design skills or coding skills required)
- everything can be outsourced (if you can't do something, you can hire someone for cheap to do it for you: writing, coding, design, social media, etc)
The basic concept of affiliate marketing is simple – you’re promoting products related to the topic of your website.
This is different than actually selling them. Instead, you give people a link and they follow this to make the purchase. If they do so, you earn a little money.
The end result is that affiliate marketing is an extremely flexible type of business and it also has a large amount of growth potential. You can make your affiliate website on any topic you want, grow it as fast as you have time for, and scale it leveraging online tools and outsourcing work.
The biggest advantage of affiliate marketing is that you can do it well even with no previous experience. You can easily learn all the skills you need and having a specific background isn’t necessary.
In fact, I make my living through affiliate marketing now and I hadn’t even heard of the concept when I first got started in 2010. I joined a newbie-training site called Wealthy Affiliate. This site specializes in affiliate marketing and uses step-by-step training to teach you exactly what to do.
They focus on newbies, so even if you've never built a website before, you can just follow the lessons step by step. You'll learn:
- how to build a website
- how to write articles that rank in Google
- how to create links that make you money
- how to promote your website on social media
Making money online without any experience doesn't mean you can earn a ton of money without doing any work. That's not possible! But you can start out a complete dummy, and work your way up to professional, full-time online marketer in a matter of months!
