I received a strange piece of mail today in my PO Box. The company was Web Listing Inc, and they sent me a bill of $85. The bill is for a search engine listing, eight keyword phrase listings, and ranking reports. The issue is that there's no reason these people should have access to my domain information, and there's absolutely no reason for me to pay them. It's flat-out scam! Search engine listings are free, and simply by creating a website you will automatically get listed in search engines without having to do anything at all. The bit about the limit of 8 keywords listings is complete nonsense. Is that for the homepage, is that only 8 pages? Do I pay per keyword or by rank for a keyword? For more insight into what keywords are I suggest you look my training on how to use Jaaxy, but if keywords are a mystery to you, know that these guys are making stuff up. You do not have to pay for keyword listings. Ranking reports are in fact something worth paying for if you don't have the time to check for yourself by searching in Google, or don't want to take the time to set up Google Analytics (free). In a nutshell, these guys are running an old fashioned mail scam, definitely looking to take advantage of newbies, and probably targeting the elderly. My grandparents constantly pay for stuff they don't have to because companies like this use deceptive marketing tactics. Something worth mentioning is that Web Listings Inc is affiliated or associated with Site Build It (SBI) in some way because the only domain they wanted me to pay to “get listed” was the domain I registered through the SBI website while I was doing my review. It's unclear if SBI knows that this is going on, or perhaps Web Listings Inc is scraping data from the registrar that SBI uses. Domains that I have registered with Godaddy and Namecheap have not received the same kind of attention. Don't pay these guys a dime, and report them to your local post office if you receive something like this!
