With all the articles and videos about how wonderful it is to make money from home, I think that some people seriously forget that the process is actually challenging and sometimes downright tedious. Now I’ve probably been involved in an online business for probably about two years, and for the most part I enjoy what I do. However, there are some days (like today) when the last thing I want to do is write another blog post, and try to figure out how to be unique, engaging and actually say something interesting. This is something that pretty much everyone in online business feels sometimes, but there are ways to get around it.
Do you have to work right now?
Working from home is well-known for its flexibility, and often the deadlines you have aren’t really deadlines. For example, I aim to post on here on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights, but in practice, I don’t always. That deadline is flexible, but other deadlines I have aren’t. I find that if I work for too long without a break, or just for too many hours in a day, the work starts to get very tedious, and probably takes at least twice as long as it would normally.
When this happens, I look very carefully at my deadlines and try to work out what has to be done, and what can be shoved off until another day. Even if all of my deadlines have to be done today, finding a few hours to take off can make all the difference in the world. I don’t know about you, but I find that I always work too much in a day. I might spend ten hours a day at my computer simply because there were a lot of things that I wanted to get done, even though strictly speaking, half of them could have been left until tomorrow.
Clear your mind and move your body
Working in an online business gets challenging because you spend so much time sitting down and thinking. This is particularly true for me, because many of the things I write are scientific or academic in nature, which requires a considerable amount of concentration and research. After a full day of working, I feel like I cannot think. There are two key things that I have to do to get past this stressful state of mind. The first is to find a way to stop thinking for a while. Normally this involves lying on the couch and watching television (as lazy as that sounds). Sometimes I like taking a bath instead. I think that lying down feels so nice after you have been sitting in the same chair for most of the day for the last five days straight.
The second approach is to go for a walk, or something else that gets my blood flowing. This always helps me to concentrate better. It’s really easy to say that you don’t have time to stop working because of deadlines, and honestly, I say this all the time. In reality, some days you really do have to keep working regardless what you feel, but most of the time, having a break is worth the time and normally it dramatically improves your productivity.
