This is an old post. Please visit this post about traffic for updated, better quality info on this topic!
Blogging is a relatively intuitive task, particularly for someone who does a lot of writing anyway, but you may find that your blog is not getting nearly as much traffic as you expected. Getting traffic to your blog requires more than being good at writing and this can shock many people who try to create or grow a blog.
However, there are some very simple approaches that you can use to boost traffic and make your blog considerably more popular.
1. Post recent, relevant and engaging content
Few people are interested in reading an in-depth review of a book that has been out for ten years, or a discussion about something that is highly relevant to you personally, but not to your readers. You might be able to do this when your blog has a lot of traffic and is popular, but it is not a good starting approach.
Instead, you want to focus on choosing topics that are relevant, such as something that was in the news recently or a discussion about a controversial new law that is being proposed. Ideally, you want to choose an angle that will engage your audience. This angle may be something that is unique to you or it can be something more general.
Choosing content that is relevant to your viewers is very important, because you will get more traffic to your site from search engines. For example, if there was a news story about medical marijuana, a large number of people would be searching these terms. Regardless of what perspective you take in your blog post, if you tie it in with the topic of the news story, you are going to increase the number of people that see your blog.
2. Use social media
Although some people read blog sites regularly, most don’t. Instead, many more people use social media, like Facebook, on a regular basis. You need to take this into account when you are trying to attract an audience.
Tying your blog to social media is very easy to do, and gives you the ability to promote any blog post you make on this type of media. Focusing on building your audience through social media is very important, and you may find yourself spending a lot of time working on this. Don’t worry too much about how much work it is, because this type of media can help you to build your audience very fast.
Work with as many social websites as you can effectively and promote new posts you make on these sites. Social media has become very popular and effective as an advertising tool for many people, and is beginning to be significant in the lives of increasing numbers of people.
