Working online has a lot of perks, but sometimes it can be hard to find your motivation. Without a boss to notice when you don’t work, it is very easy to make excuses to get out of what you planned to do, or to find that you simply cannot focus on work. There are different ways to find motivation for everyone, but here are the top five ways that work for me.
1. Go for a Walk
A walk is one of the best things to clear your mind. It doesn’t have to be a long walk, sometimes just a five minute brisk walk is all it takes to get your creative juices flowing and remind yourself what exactly you wanted to work on to start off with. While a longer walk might help you more, be careful that the walk doesn’t turn into an excuse not to work. You can quickly develop this into a habit, and it will make your working easier overall.
2. Change Topics
It’s easy to find yourself getting stuck on one topic. Sometimes it happens because the topic is too difficult, other times your mind simply refuses to focus on it. With an online business, you normally have the flexibility to change your topic completely. Sometimes a new topic can be just what you need to get motivated again. You’ll may find that you can go back to your previous topic another day, or even later in the same day, without any hassles.
3. Get Some Healthy Food
It’s really tempting to go for chocolate or energy drinks when you are having trouble concentrating, but this really isn’t a good idea. Junk food doesn’t really help you to concentrate any better, and you will feel worse once you come down off the sugar or caffeine high. Healthy food can give you the pick-me-up that you need without seriously screwing up your thinking processes. I’ve found that sometimes a piece of fruit or a glass of water can make me feel refreshed and help me to work out what to do next.
4. Change your Sitting Position
The way that you sit can have a lot to do with how effectively you work, particularly if you have been in the same position for hours. You can try sitting in a different chair, or simply sitting more upright. I find that if I shift my sitting position periodically and stretch once in a while I can regain my focus relatively easily.
5. Don’t Browse the Internet
It’s really easy to think that you can find some motivation or something to write about by browsing the internet. This doesn’t work at all. You end up browsing random sites and often find that what you are looking at has nothing to do with what you were trying to work on. I notice that when I browse the web like that I don’t end up doing much thinking at all. This isn’t a good thing if you are trying to get motivated.
When all else fails, you may find that sometimes you simply need a break.
