Product Name: Storenvy
Guided Tour: No
Support: 9am to 6pm PST
Storenvy is a free storefront for creative types who want a place to show their products online. It is the equivalent of an ‘internet flea market’. There’s nothing wrong with that, if that’s what you’re looking for. However, if you want to build a real business online Storenvy is not the place to do it.
What I Liked
Storenvy isn’t a bad place to start out if you’re making things by hand that you want to sell. The customer experience is fun and unique – that often equates to dollars being spent. That’s a good thing for sellers.
One of the great things about Storenvy is the ability to gain traffic from other stores. Similar to walking through a flea market, customers on Storenvy can (and do) easily travel between stores while shopping.
The categories at the top of the website serve as the navigation and they guide the customer wherever they want to go. They also entice them to look around more. One customer might buy several items from multiple stores in one sitting.
Jon Crawford (CEO) says, “12% of all sales on Storenvy come from through traffic”. That’s not bad, it shows customers are engaged and enjoying the experience.
What I Didn't Like
Storenvy is a free alternative to building your own business online. If you wanted to build a store online using other ecommerce storefront builders<<internal link)) it would cost but you get what you pay for.
It’s not a real business
No one will ever take you seriously if you're not willing to invest in your own business. At least not at any rate worth discussing. Free methods like Storenvy are for hobbyists – those who truly love what they do and don’t mind getting pennies for it.
Here are some important things to consider before using Storenvy.
- Your store will look like all the rest.
- You’re promoting Storenvy’s brand instead of your own.
- You’re building on a foundation that you don’t own. (this never ends well)
- No direct relationship with your customers
Lack of Customization
Storenvy boasts that their shops are fully customizable. That is just not true.
The lack of customization is a major problem. They want to create a consistent ‘look’ for their customers, which is understandable. The problem is you can’t create a unique experience for your customers.
The Storenvy dashboard has an “easy mode” and a “CSS mode”.
Easy mode only allows minor customizations like font sizes, color and background changes. Beyond that there’s not much you can do.
In CSS mode you can customize things a little further but there's two main downsides.
- If you don’t have any CSS programming skills you’re out of luck.
- If you know CSS, you’ll realize how limited this panel really is.
Product listings are one of the most important things for online stores. Uploading product details to your store should be easy because it’s the one thing you’ll be doing more than just about anything else.
With Storenvy you have to list each variant of your product separately if you want to charge different prices depending on variant. For example, if you sell shirts and need to charge more for larger sizes you have to list them separately.
This is a time consuming problem that Storenvy needs to address.
Search engines like Google are the biggest drivers of customers online. Without optimizing for search engines your store might never see its first customer.
Storenvy handles optimization the way it handles everything else – with a one-size-fits-all solution. You have no way to improve your store's performance.
When you’re lumped in with a bunch of other stores, like you are in Storenvy, you need optimization more than ever. You need a way to make your store stand out, since it’s practically impossible to do it with their design features. Sadly, optimizing your Storenvy store isn't possible either.
No matter what, if you want to make money online you need some type of training. You can have all the free stuff in the world, if you don’t know how to use it, it’s worthless. Storenvy gives you enough training to learn to set up your store but that’s it.
You’ll have no idea what it takes to market that store and that's what really counts. There’s no way Storenvy will make you any type of money until you understand how to sell things online.
What Makes Storenvy Different?
Storenvy is different from anything else in its category. It’s not an ecommerce storefront – it’s not a social media platform – it’s both. For shoppers, Storenvy is great because they can find things they didn't intend to find. This is also great for sellers because you can get traffic to your store, from other sellers.
Who Is Storenvy For?
Storenvy is a social ecommerce platform for independent marketers who want to focus on creating crafts and other goods. It’s a place for creative types to sell goods like soaps, paintings, T-shirts and more – without having to worry about technical stuff.
This ecommerce platform didn't score too well, but there are other amazing ones out there that I've reviewed. My favorites so far are Big Commerce (92/100), Shopify (91/100), and Volusion (90/100). They all have different features, so check them out and see which one fits your goals best.
This isn't a bad site, and may work for some people. Heck, you can't complain much because it's free. But as far as ecommerce solutions go, my favorite it definitely Volusion. It was a much more versatile platform, and had a lot more features that I think would contribute to the long-term success of your business.
Storenvy Versus Affiliate Marketing
Storenvy is quite limited in almost every aspect that's important to growing a business online. There’s no question that you have more possibilities to make money with affiliate marketing.
For example, let’s say you like to make soaps. A friend says “your soaps are great, you should try to sell them”. Not a bad idea, right?
So you set up a store on storenvy and wait for shoppers to find you. There's more than 11,000 results for “soap” on Storenvy, so you'll be waiting a while.
During all this you start to notice other things you'd like to sell in addition to your soaps. More products, more money, right? You cannot do that with Storenvy.
When people buy online, they tend to buy more than one thing. Often they buy several things that compliment each other. Someone buying soaps would also buy lotions, towels or rugs. With affiliate marketing you can sell all those products, right alongside your own.
Every product you can think is sold through affiliate marketing and every company you can think of is likely to have an affiliate program that's free to join. Wouldn't you like to be able to sell things from Amazon, WalMart, Target all on YOUR website?
I’m giving you the chance to start in affiliate marketing, just like I did. It’s free to sign up, you get two free websites, 24 hour live support, community and all the training you need to sell whatever you want, whenever you want.
Nothing’s stopping you now.
