What is it
Social Link Machine is a WordPress plugin that was created to automate the sharing of your website’s content. It automatically shares to twelve social networks on a schedule you create, in order to help you get traffic to your website.
This product is nothing more than a post scheduler. It automates the sharing of your blog content to social media. There’s nothing unique or valuable about it. There are a number of other tools that do the same thing, most of them are free, or ⅓ the cost of Social Link Machine.
Before you buy
After seeing this product in action and being warned of its many upsells, I decided not to buy it. Fortunately, I was able to avoid most of the upsells associated with it.
However, there is one upsell I learned about that is supposed to be an integral part of Social Link Machine. It’s always very disappointing to buy a product, only to find that you really need to be one more to make things work properly. It’s a shady sales tactic and marketers who use are not respected in my book.
Backlinks to Your Backlinks
Backlinks indexer is meant to be an upgrade to Social Link Machine. But it is also sold separately. Believe it or not, this is a product designed to get more backlinks to your backlinks. (yes, you read that right)
Obviously these guys are getting a little carried away.
The theory is that, if the web properties that are linking to your site, have more links pointing to them they will carry more ‘weight’. And in theory, they’re right. Unfortunately, in practice, they couldn’t be more wrong.
What I liked
On individual pages and posts within your website you can disable the sharing so that social link machine will avoid posting things you don’t want shared. With all of the ‘automation’ that comes along with this product, I was happy to see an off switch somewhere.
What I didn’t like
Social Link Machine was built to automate social sharing for the purpose of improving a website’s placement in search engine results. Sometimes, in business, it’s good to find a way to automate things. However, social media is not one of those things.
Here are just a few of the potential problems I have with this product.
Social Link Machine is supposed to share your website’s pages across twelve different social networks. The point is to gain ‘backlinks’ to your website.
Search engines look at backlinks like votes. The more links pointing to a webpage, the more popular it appears – therefore they will give it more trust and move it higher on the first page results.
Obviously the higher your pages rank the more traffic and sales you will get.
The problem is, this is an outdated way of thinking. Search engines no longer look at just the link itself. They look at the quality of the page it’s coming from, what type of interaction it received and how much.
Once they realize (and it doesn't take long) that you’re ‘linkbuilding’ (obtaining links unnaturally) they will remove your site from their search results. It happens all the time, and once it happens to you there’s no coming back.
You lose your entire business.
Posting too often to social media can the adverse effects. When your followers notice that you’re doing a lot self promotion they will unfollow you quickly.
No one wants to sit and listen to someone talk about themselves, especially when it’s out of context. And if you auto-posting you have no idea what’s going on in that specific network at the time. This is the fastest way to lose tons of followers at once.
There isn’t much point in sharing your posts to social media unless they get some kind of engagement. Having a link to your content on FaceBook isn’t going to help you at all. It’s the engagement with that post and people actually clicking the link that helps you.
Using this product to automate everything isn’t going to help you get engagement. In fact, it will keep you from getting it.
If you’re looking for help posting to social media, there are better ways of doing it. Completely automating your sharing process will destroy your social network, your website and your reputation.
Instead, try using an alternative like Hootsuite to help you schedule and manage posting on popular social networks. Hootsuite is simple to use and it allows you to schedule posts while still engaging with your followers.
Social media is about being social – providing interesting content to those who follow you and giving them something valuable to consume. It’s not about pushing out all your posts and pages as much as possible in order to gain a backlink.
That type of strategy will never work.
You’re probably reading this post because you searched for something and found my website in the search results, or on social media. If I had used methods like Social Link Machine my website would not show up at all, therefore you wouldn’t be here and I would be out of business.
If you want to build a business online then do it the right way. Give people what they want instead of forcing what you want them to see.
Think about if the situation was reversed and you were being forced to watch or read an automated, one-sided piece of self-promotion.
When’s the last time you watched a commercial and enjoyed it? Did you think to yourself, “I can’t wait until my show is interrupted again, so I can consume content that I don’t care about at all”?
Of course you didn’t, that’s the old way of marketing and it’s dying faster everyday. Now, you have to give people valuable information that’s relevant to their needs. If you don’t you will fail.
Don’t worry though, it’s much easier to build an online business this way. You just have to learn what the people actually want, and how they want it. All this is something you can easily learn.
You can learn in a community environment, with people just like you and me, who want to know more.
You can read more about the community here. Then you can sign up for your $0 starter account and get two free websites, support 24/7 and the kind of training that will have you building a business you can profit from for years to come.
