Running an online business is a captivating concept, but it’s easy to imagine that only some types of people can be successful. Personally, I always imagined that a successful online businessperson would be someone highly charismatic, independent and good at talking, all things that I’m not. In reality, I have met many different types of people who run online businesses successfully, and sometimes the people don’t have much in common at all. Truth is, pretty much anyone can be successful in an online business, although in fairness, there are some personality traits that do make it a little easier.
Likes solitude
No matter how you look at it, running an online business involves being alone a lot more than you would normally. Most other jobs have some form of face-to-face interaction, whether it is with coworkers, clients or a boss. These interactions are something that you miss very quickly and having to work on your own all day means that you don’t tend to talk to people much.
For some people, like myself, the solitude is a good thing. I get nervous around people sometimes, and that has always made it difficult for me to have a ‘normal’ job. I find that I have to force myself to go out socially every so often, otherwise I simply don’t see anyone except my husband.
Be disciplined and keep a schedule
Many people find that the hardest thing about an online business is making sure you consistently do the work. For most people, starting an online business involves going through a little bit of a romance period. What this means is that for a couple of weeks or a couple of months, you find the new business really exciting, and write content quickly and easily. This is a fantastic time in the life of an online business, but it doesn’t last.
When you work in a ‘normal’ job, you have someone who tells you what to do and when, and you have guidelines that you need to follow for your work. An online business isn’t like this, and you end up defining your own schedule. This needs to be a schedule that lets you get enough work done on your site without sacrificing all your life for your work. Myself, I tend to do much more work than I should, and leave very little time tom myself.
At the end of the day, to be successful in an online business, you need to be able to make a schedule and stick to it. This is certainly easier for some people than for others and honestly, it took me a long time to get used to. For example, some people try to keep track of how many hours they want to work a day, while others map out what content they are going to create and when.
For most people, learning how to keep a schedule just takes time, but if you have a serious problem maintaining self-discipline, an online business might not be the best approach to take.
