The thing that never fails to amaze me about online business is that there is always something new to learn. There are a lot of people out there making money online, and they all seem to do it in slightly different ways, with different outcomes. For some people, the concept of affiliate marketing, or online marketing, seems scary and challenging, but as I’ve been finding out in the past couple of months, it isn’t as bad as it first looks.
What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing sounds complex and a little scary, but it’s actually one of the most common ways of making money online. I’ve seen a lot of sites intentionally dressing up the concept and making it seem like there is some big secret to being successful at affiliate marketing. In reality, there is no secret, and affiliate marketing is something you can teach yourself, as long as you have the ability to research information and a high tolerance for people trying to sell you things.
The basic concept of affiliate marketing is to promote products that are sold online, such as through Amazon. This involves signing up as an affiliate to the site, and putting links or banners on your site that go to their products. When people click on your link and buy the product you are promoting (or anything from that site within a certain time period), you get a proportion.
The complicated part
Strictly speaking, you can place affiliate links on any website, even if they aren’t relevant to your website. The problem is, doing this means people aren’t likely to want to buy what you are promoting, and probably won’t be interested in staying on your site. Effectively making, and maintaining, a website is probably the biggest challenging when it comes to affiliate marketing, and a lot of people find it difficult to figure out where to start.
This was also the position that I was in a couple of months ago, before I started my journey through Wealthy Affiliate. I did actually have a website of my own (a blog hosted through WordPress), so I had some background in running a website.
