I have just finished my third week of training to learn how to effectively earn money online through by making an affiliate marketing website. This is something I had actually been meaning to learn for quite some time now, but never got around to it. Affiliate marketing is an effective way to make money online, and I know a number of people who make considerable money through affiliate marketing. However, as I am learning, there is a considerable amount of set up and background work that you need to go through before you actually make a profit.
So, is it worth it?
Thus far, I have probably put about twenty or so hours into training and developing my website and no, I haven’t made a profit. This doesn’t actually mean much though. I have just begun to place content on my site, and I have no actual affiliate products on the site yet. In reality, it isn’t so different than going to school or taking a course. You cannot reasonably expect to be making a profit from your degree while you are still taking it.
While I’m not making a profit for my effort, I do think the training is worth the time. At the end of the day, I’m learning a wide range of skills and approaches. All of these are directly relevant to affiliate marketing (else I wouldn’t be learning them in the first place), but they are also relevant to other forms of online business, including freelancing, or even for developing websites for physical businesses. I think that I will come out of this with skills that will help me regardless of whether my site actually makes a profit.
The learning process
I learn mostly through doing, rather than reading or listening, so the training I am going through at Wealthy Affiliate works perfectly for me. I am not just reading instructions on what I should or should not be doing, but am actually creating a website step-by-step. This is kind of fun, but challenging sometimes.
Because I have some experience with working online already, some of the things that I am learning are redundant, and I end up being tempted to skip steps or to go my own way. When I started this process I promised myself that I would follow all of the instructions in the different lessons at Wealthy Affiliate.
There were two reasons for this. First, I wanted to be sure I learned as much as possible from the experience. Second, going through the training isn’t just for me. I wanted to be able to share my experience with people who were thinking about trying the training, or who want to learn more about affiliate marketing.
