I am an internet marketer, and I've officially called myself that for about 6 months now. I worked two jobs (my teaching job and internet marketing) for about 2 years before I finally quit and went full time. You can read the full story here, but today I wanted to share with you what my daily routine is.
It's much more boring that you might think. I know a lot of so-called ‘gurus' will give you the impression that you'll be working for a beach in Thailand in 2 weeks, but the truth of the matter is that Thailand is hot and humid. The wifi on the beach sucks. And the glare on your laptop will make you basically 50% less productive than usual.
Trust me, I've tried it.
So if I'm not on a beach in Thailand, I much be super rich, traveling around the world on my private jet, spending hours at the gym getting washboard abs, and being sure to press that magic button for 2 minutes a day with my ‘automated system'.
Actually I spend a lot of my day sitting in my chair, typing, making videos, responding to comments, communicating with freelancers, watching training videos (yes, I'm still learning), reading blogs, tweeting, sharing, and updating old sites.
It's a busy day, every day.
But it's still awesome
I wouldn't want to have any other job.
Plus, I realize there are some problems with my current system, and I'm trying to fix them.
First, let's take a look at my day (don't get too jealous)
- 9:00 AM Wake Up (no alarm)
- 9:10 AM Make and Drink Coffee/Eat Breakfast
- 9:30 AM Check the Stock Market, Check Email
- 10:00 AM Respond to Emails, Browse The Internet, Reply To Comments on Videos/Posts
- 11:00 AM Battle Distractions and Continue to Pretend to Work
- 12:00 PM Eat Lunch
- 12:20 PM Feel Like I Wasted the Morning, Do Something Productive
- 2:30 PM Ride Bike To Gym
- 4:30 PM Arrive Home, Shower
- 5:00 PM Blog, Record Videos, More Distractions
- 7:00 PM Dinner, Netflix
- 9:00 PM Finally Sit Down to Work Till I'm Tired
- 1:00 AM Go to Bed
Summary of My Day
So you can see that I am always doing something, all day long, but it's pretty relaxed. I have a serious problem with mixing distractions like YouTube, general chat on Wealthy Affiliate, and checking my accounts to see how much money I made during the day. I would say I WASTE about 2 hours per day to distractions alone.
I get about 4 – 5 hours of work done on an average day, despite feeling busy ALL THE TIME. But I do actually do some REAL work every day, and consistency counts!
Honestly, I'm not too worried about the schedule because I can wake up at any time I want, and have enough time to drink my coffee slowly. I get to go to the gym every day, and am never stressed out about my job or my boss.
I could do some awesome stuff if I really wanted to . Even if I woke up late, at 10 o'clock and put in 5 hours of work right away, it would only be 3:00 in the afternoon, and I could still go to the gym, be back by 5 PM, and have 7 hours to do whatever.
But my lack of organization is not the point. My point is only that you can see what ONE internet marketer does with his time!
But wait, there's more!
It may seem boring, but actually, it's like any other kind of work in that sometimes you have to work, and sometimes you don't.
In 2012 I spent 20 days in the Philippines, and 14 days in Malaysia. I also had a 2 week holiday while I was in China (visiting the US), so when all was said and done, I had 2 months of paid vacation. Remember, the websites keep making money even when you're not working! Not bad at all, right?
During that time I got several different qualifications for diving. I just bought an all grain home brewing kit, will buy a motorcycle next month, want to go Skydiving, and am planning on learning how to sail this year.
That's a lot of stuff, but it's all possible because I put in the time and effort now, and take the time off when I need to.
How's that for the lifestyle of an internet marketer?
You don't have to design your life like mine. I'm sure you have your own goals, and your business should reflect these. But be sure to set goals appropriately for yourself so you know when you've gone off track, and you know when you've accomplished what you set out to do.
