Work at home data entry is an appealing idea to many people. After all, data entry is a field that requires very little previous knowledge or experience, making it a potential opportunity for just about anyone. Global Data Entry is one site that is trying to take advantage of this idea by getting data entry hopefuls to sign up.
But, is it a legitimate work from home opportunity? After all, the company does make some pretty bold claims.
All of that set of claims are true, but they isn’t actually too unusual. Data entry is one of a number of types of online job that don’t require a website or recruiting. Another example of this is freelancing. This can be a good thing, but don’t imagine that this requires any less work.
On the other hand, the claims about income are a lot more unrealistic.
There are few jobs that are likely to earn you $300 for an hour’s worth of work – especially not in the data entry field. Additionally, earning money in data entry is going to start off much slower than that.
A major issue with this site is that it charges an entry fee, and not a small one either.
Even if you want to get into data entry as a way of earning money, signing up for a site like this is never a good start. For starters, the site gives no indication of the quality of the jobs available, how much they pay or how easy they are to complete.
Additionally, the company says that you will have to sign up for a pay admin account, and get your earnings through that account. Getting paid through a relatively obscure third-party site isn’t encouraging, especially when there are more trustworthy options, like PayPal, available.
Here’s the thing…
Data entry is a big field and there are a lot of places you can go to for work. If you really wanted to do data entry, look for sites like Freelancer or Upwork (previous oDesk) that are free to join and offer a large number of different jobs and different people offering those jobs.
Those types of sites tend to be more secure and safer, especially as they have a solid history of offering work in a range of fields. Plus, you get to see exactly what you are getting into without having to put any money down.
Data Entry And Income
There are many sites out there offering data entry jobs to some degree or another, and data entry jobs always seem like a great place to start for working from home. But, this is a field that you need to be very careful in.
Legitimate data entry jobs do exist, but unfortunately there is also a huge number of scams. One of the biggest indications of a scam in this field is having a startup cost, as it is rare for legitimate data entry jobs to charge you to join.
Even if you find a legitimate data entry job, the potential to earn money is very little. Most data entry jobs will end up paying somewhere in the realm of $2 to $3 per hour, rather than the $300 that Global Data Entry implies. In many cases, this isn’t paid as an hourly rate, but you are paid a little bit per piece that you do. This can make it seem like you are going to earn more money than you actually do.
At the same time, data entry can be a very tedious job and you have little control over the specific work that you are doing. This can quickly turn the process of working from home into something that is time-consuming and boring. That mightn’t be so bad if you were earning decent money – but with data entry that is very unlikely.
There are exceptions, of course. Some data entry jobs do pay a decent wage, but those are the specialized jobs, like medical data entry. For that type of job, you need to have a specific skill set and the right experience, and you won’t find those jobs on sites like Global Data Entry.
This means that in general, data entry is an area with a lot of scammers and where there is little potential for you to actually earn a decent income. It isn’t really surprising either. Data entry is a low skill job and low skill jobs always have low wages, after all, there is no shortage of people who can potentially do the job.
This situation is a good indication of why it is always better to work for yourself, versus working with a company like Global Data Entry. When you work for yourself, you have control over your potential to earn income.
Is Global Data Entry A Scam?
No. You pay a fee, and get some training as a result of it. Their advertising is misleading, but I guess lots of companies do that.
The question of whether or not it's worth your time and money is different. I would say that if you want to do data entry, start with free methods, namely setting up a profile on a freelancing website. There are a lot more jobs out there that are easy to do like being a virtual assistant, spellchecking articles, or other simple tasks.
Despite what the site says, one of the most effective ways to earn income is by building your own site. The approach seems unappealing to many because of the amount of work, but if you want to build a successful business, then some degree of work is unavoidable. For me, I'd rather spend my days learning how to build a profitable business rather than just spending more time working for other people. How about you?
