Online businesses are popular ways to earn money online, but finding out real information about what works and what doesn’t can be difficult and very frustrating. For every single piece of good honest information online, there are probably ten different sites that are trying to sell you the ‘best’ way to make money online. Now, there are actually some products and services online that are worth the money, but these are few and far between. As a general rule, if you have to pay to make money online, make sure you know exactly what you are getting for the money and whether it is worth it. Because at the end of the day, it costs almost nothing to set up an online business and make a profit.
Expensive services, scams and rip-offs
Perhaps the most common ways that people try to make online is by ripping other people off. Many people take a lot of time and effort to make and market products that are expensive, and don’t really offer the purchaser anything of value. There is no hard and fast way to determine whether a product is really any good or whether it is a scam, but one approach is to have a look at the reviews. I don’t mean the reviews that the seller has on his or her site, because those will normally be biased.
Look for websites (like this one) that offer reviews of products. If you’re going to buy something, make sure you know what you are actually getting. For example a ‘system for making quick and easy money online’ is probably a scam (making money online is never going to be quick and easy) and may consist of little more than a eBook and several videos. Furthermore, the system might be exploiting something that only works for a little while, and then is ineffective (such as keyword stuffing in articles).
As a general rule, beware of anything that tells you ‘$200 value for only $49’, or something similar. The statement is nothing more than a gimmick, because the ‘value’ that the website owner is putting on the product is the value that they have decided its worth. I could say the information in this post is worth $200, but that doesn’t mean it’s actually the case, especially when you can find the same information elsewhere online if you look.
Sites that offer good training can be very hard to come by, but they are out there. As with other types of products and services, you have to be very careful about what you sign up for and make sure you know what you are paying for. Personally, training is beneficial for people who are new to trying to run an online business, because it can teach a lot of concepts that aren’t immediately obvious, and apply to all different types of business. Again, it really is a matter of being selective, and it really helps to know what you want, and find someone who uses the training that you can ask specific questions to.
One type of training that I have used and found very relevant to online business was Wealthy Affiliate University. The site has a strong focus on providing information from the ground up, which is really good for people (like me) who have no background in the type of online business they are teaching. The site itself is specifically focused on teaching affiliate marketing, but a lot of the lessons and information apply to any type of online business. They also have a free membership, which is a good way to test the waters and find out whether what they offer is right for your needs specifically.
