Being a single mom isn't easy, and working a 2nd job to make ends meet isn't going to make it any easier. But let's get real for a second – complaining about it isn't going to get you anywhere. There are ways to improve your current situation, but you need to be willing to work in order to get there.
There's more than one way to skin a cat, and there's more than one way to earn money from home. There are lots of opportunities online, and the hardest part isn't finding them, it's knowing which ones are worth your time.
This blog post is going to be about ONE of these ways. Affiliate marketing is something I do for a living. I've been doing it for about three years, and NO, I didn't go to school to learn it – I learned everything I needed to know online. I'm no genius or computer scientist, so if I can do it, you can too. There's a lot of stuff to cover, so let's get started.
The Basic Concepts
The first thing you will have to do is make a website. I know that sounds scary, and if you've never build a site before, you are probably thinking, “OMG! No way. I do not want to learn code”. Actually, coding is soooo 90's. I don't know any code either. The building of the site can be done in a few minutes with the push of a button. Try it. Make your first website for free right here!
After you build your website, you will have to write articles for it. These are going to be informative articles that will help people find information they are looking for when they search for something online. Yes, your website will be listed in Bing, Google, and Yahoo!
You will also sign up for what's called an “affiliate program”. Most businesses have these, and signing up for this essentially makes you a freelance advertiser. You get a special link that identifies you as an affiliate of the company, and if someone clicks that link and buys something, you make a commission.
Sometimes, you will write articles about products and services you like, and you'll probably have a few ads on your blog. When someone comes to your website for information, they might click an ad, or they might like the product you wrote a review of. This is how you make sales.
That's how affiliate marketing works, and that's I make money on the internet.
No secrets. No magic. Just a website and some affiliate links.
What to Write About
This is a big question, and you'll have to answer this for yourself. This is something people usually stress about in the beginning because they don't know what they want to make their site about. But actually, this is one of the most awesome parts of affiliate marketing! It means that you can make a website about any topic you want, and the more you love the topic, the more money you can make!
Most people when starting out want to write about a topic that will be popular and profitable. But after two or three months of blogging about things they really aren't interested in, either their writing starts to suffer, or they just quit.
But if you pick something you love, people will take notice. You will reach out to other people that also care about this topic. They will follow your blog, follow you in social media, and you will DEFINITELY make some sales. Heck, who wouldn't buy awesome stuff from a person you trust, right?
Get creative. Love your website. Engage with your visitors, and be part of the community. This is how you grow long term profits from your website.
And if you are stuck, I can help you find something that fits you. I do it all the time.
Downsides to Consider
You won't start making money right away. This should not be a last ditch effort to pay the rent. I have a lot of single moms comment on my site and tell me that they have bills and they need a make-money system that is guaranteed, is free, and will start generating money instantly.
Sorry, but it doesn't exist. This is how gurus and scam artists are able to survive so well on the internet. They sell you a dream, and bill you $97 for it.
You'll also need to be persistent, or at least stubborn about working through problems you run into. As I'll talk about below, it takes time to learn any new skill. You are going to run into frustrating situations, and you are very likely going to doubt that you were “cut out for this”. I see people quit all the time. But I also see people who refuse to quit, then look back and laugh at the silly mistakes they were making before.
I'll say it again. I'm not a genius, and I figured out how to do this.
It's not about being smart. It's about being dumb enough to try again.
You'll also need some money to pay for training. I know that I just lost a bunch of you right now, but I guess it's better to tell you now, than later. Some guys will try to sell you on a completely free system that just costs $19.95 per month. LOL. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it happens all the time. That's how they suck you in.
I'm just saying, don't go into thing thinking you can start a profitable website for $0. You absolutely should NOT be spending more than a few hundred dollars. Remember than many guys will offer a product for cheap, but in the back end sales pages they'll sell you “add ons” or “one time offers” or “mentorship” for hundreds or thousands of dollars. If you've ever bought into an “online opportunity” then you know what I'm talking about.
Things to keep in mind
You are going to be LEARNING. For some reason, when it comes to money, people seem to think that you either have it, or you don't. You either understand it, or you just weren't born with the skill. This is not true. You can learn how to earn money just like playing the piano, or speaking Spanish.
It's important to remember that you will not always be a beginner. Stick around long enough, and eventually, the information will sink in.
Affiliate marketing will fix the root problem of your situation, instead of being a temporary fix. Getting a second job at this point will just take you away from the home for more time. And that means you'll probably need a baby sitter, which is more money out of your pocket. You'll also be driving more, which is another chunk of change that will be disappearing from your wallet.
It's possible to do this full time, and though I definitely do not recommend you quit your job tomorrow and decided to be a stay-at-home-mom slash full-time-affiliate-marketer, the long term prospects of being able to quit your current job are real. I did it. This is an exit strategy that could completely change the direction of your life.
There are other ways to earn money from home. But many online jobs like data entry, article writing, or virtual assistant jobs are simply adding more hours to your day. There's only so much time, and adding another 6 hour session in the evenings will only yield finite amount of money.
Affiliate marketing is different. The internet doesn't sleep, and your website never takes a break. A website can earn money in any country in the world, every minute of the day. It takes a lot of work on the foundation of your business before it can start making money, but once you are there, you will be making sales while you are sleeping, driving, shopping, and on vacation. The same just isn't true with other types of online jobs.
