Established in 1996, HostMonster has been around for a while. Offering competitively priced hosting for small businesses and those new to websites, HostMonster has simplified the hosting process. They provide a solid and professional service that targets small businesses and startups.
But they are also part of the Endurance International Group, a huge conglomerate of hosting companies. In my experience, bigger companies tend to not work as hard to keep customers. So is this really the host you want to choose? There are so many others out there!
What Makes HostMonster Unique?
HostMonster is unique for offering well-priced hosting plans. They also include all the essential one-click scripts that you would expect from a quality hosting company. This includes WordPress and Woocommerce.
HostMonster Online Reputation
HostMonster has an adequate online reputation, with most customers giving them 3 or 4 stars. WhoIsHostingThis.com give HostMonster a score of 3.4 out of 5 stars, with many reviewers giving 3 stars across the board. Server uptime, customer support, and available features all score 3 stars.
The general impression given by these reviews is that HostMonster has an average online reputation. HostMonster does not appear to perform poorly or amazingly. They simply have a solid, middle-of-the-road reputation without any real complaints or high praise. Customer support scores are average with no horror stories.
With a ton of other hosts out there that score excellently on these same metrics, and also have reasonably, or even better priced plans, I'd say this is one strike against HostMonster. We don't want “adequate hosting”. We want “excellent hosting”.
Types Of Hosting Offered
HostMonster offers shared hosting, dedicated hosting, and VPS hosting. The price structure is easy to understand and reasonably priced. With an emphasis on small business hosting, you will not find any gimmicks or free extras. What you will find is a solid website hosting company that is aimed at small business owners.
All shared hosting comes with the traditional cPanel. With the shared hosting, you get access to an adequate drag-and-drop website builder and one-click WordPress installations. You will also receive a free domain name when opening your hosting account.
- Basic ($4.95/mo.) 1 Website, 50GB Storage, Unlimited Bandwidth, Standard Performance Server, 5 Parked Domains, 25 Sub Domains, 5 email accounts
- Plus ($6.95/mo.) 10 Websites, 150GB Storage, Unlimited Bandwidth, Standard Performance Server, 20 Parked Domains, 50 Sub Domains, 100 email accounts, Spam Prevention and $150 Marketing Vouchers
- Prime ($6.95/mo.) Unlimited Websites, Unlimited Storage, Unlimited Bandwidth, Standard Performance Server, Unlimited Parked Domains, Unlimited Sub Domains, Unlimited email accounts, Spam Prevention and $200 Marketing Vouchers, Domain Privacy (1 Domain) and Site Backup Pro
- GoPro ($14.95/mo.) Everything in the Prime package including Enhanced server performance, Dedicated IP Address, and SSL Security Certificate
Each plan comes with one-click scripts that are very useful. Some of the scripts include social media integration, online surveys, shopping carts, password protection, and image galleries. Along with these scripts, you can expect quality server technology, resulting in a decent value as far as budget hosting goes.
VPS (From $19.99/mo.)
HostMonster offer 4 Cloud Hosted VPS plans that all come with instant provisioning. The instant provisioning means that your VPS will be live the second that your payment clears.
You also get an enhanced version of cPanel with more options as well as a single user account login. The single login allows you to manage multiple domains and WordPress sites from a single login. This can be a useful feature when you have more than one site to deal with. It's a very cool feature that I haven't seen, or at least haven't seen highlighted on other hosts. It could be a security issue down the road, but it's still a cool feature.
All VPS plans are Linux based and come with CentOS already installed.
- Standard ($19.99/mo.) 2 Core Processor, 2GB RAM, 30GB Storage, 1TB Bandwidth, Free Domain, (1 year) and 1 IP Address
- Enhanced ($29.99/mo.) 2 Core Processor, 4GB RAM, 60GB Storage, 2TB Bandwidth, Free Domain, (1 year) and 2 IP Addresses
- Premium ($44.99/mo.) 3 Core Processor, 6GB RAM, 90GB Storage, 2TB Bandwidth, Free Domain, (1 year) and 2 IP Addresses
- Ultimate ($59.99/mo.) 4 Core Processor, 8GB RAM, 120GB Storage, 3TB Bandwidth, Free Domain, (1 year) and 2 IP Addresses
The prices offered for VPS are on par with other VPS hosting companies, but I still like the VPS plans from other companies better. CentOS is installed as default so that you will be up and running in no time. CentOS is a very basic Linux operating system, with some features like those that you’ll find in Windows, which makes managing your VPS more straightforward.
Dedicated Hosting (From $79.99/mo.)
All the dedicated hosting also come with instant provisioning, so that you can get started as soon as your payment clears. You will also receive mirrored storage for constant backups with full data restore options. Your websites will receive fast loading speeds due to the specialist caching system HostMonster employs. Enhanced cPanel is installed and you will receive 24/7 dedicated support.
For the features described, including the enhanced cPanel and mirrored storage, the prices offered are very reasonable. If you have big plans for your website, HostMonster dedicated hosting could be the right choice for your next site.
You probably won't need dedicated hosting at this point. Most affiliate websites start out very small, and don't need all these resources. Save your money!
HostMonster offers a 30-day money back guarantee, but the refund only covers hosting. If you have purchased any additional services, such as domain privacy or SEO services, these will not be refunded. The cancellation process is simple and can be activated through your control panel or by sending a support ticket.
HostMonster Customer Service Review
HostMonster offers 24/7 live chat support and a support ticket system for more complex issues. Although a little slow, the live chat facility is adequate. With the ticketing system, most problems should be resolved within 24 hours.
There is no phone support, but the 24/7 live chat is very helpful with a support team that is more than capable of handling most issues. Many independent reviews for HostMonster give customer support 3-stars. They are not the fastest support team, but they get the job done.
Who are the Ideal Customers for HostMonster?
The company targets small businesses, though the hosting is standard and matches what you’ll find with most other budget hosts. If you're a small business however, I'd rather recommend InMotion Hosting to you. There is no dedicated WordPress hosting, but all shared hosting does come with one-click WordPress install. The shared hosting plans are more than capable of handling WordPress blogs – even those blogs that are a little resource hungry.
HostMonster Final Review
Having spent a little time playing with a demo account, there is a lot to like with HostMonster. You get access to features such as one-click WordPress install, but there are not too many features to confuse novices. The customer support is also decent, even though they don’t offer phone support. This is a professional hosting company that should be able to resolve any issues you have quickly.
You will receive a free domain name or free transfer from another host and the order process is quick. These benefits should appeal to most small business customers.
That being said, overall, there are better hosts with more specialized features out there. I'd rather support smaller companies than just another hosting giant, and I find that the smaller companies work harder and perform better since they have a closer relationship with their clients. A company like Hostmonster would really have to blow me out of the water to get my business, and they didn't do that.
