What Is It
A pretty typical MLM focused on health and nutrition, including weight loss.
With overpriced products, a complex compensation plan and a focus on health and nutrition – FreeLife sounds like just about every other health MLM out there. Unfortunately, there is just nothing that makes the company stand out. While you might be able to make money from it, most people simply won’t succeed because failure is built into the MLM business model.
The products from this company are broken down into a number of key areas, including the following as well as business tools and packs.
Each category has from one to thirteen products, although there is a decent amount of repetition. For example, this is the first four (out of ten) products from the TAIslim line:
As is often the case with MLMs, the products for the company are majorly overpriced. The information they provide also makes it pretty hard to work out exactly how much product is in the package that you are buying – a key point in determining if FreeLife is within your budget.
However, the package does contain 15 servings that are 40.5g in size. So, in total the bag must contain around 600g of product (about 1.3lbs). That’s not a lot of product, especially for a retail price of $60 (which is what you’d be selling the product at).
The company tries to make the price seem better by making this comparison:
Yes, per serving the shake is less expensive than all of these things, but that isn’t really relevant, because it isn’t a fair comparison. Realistically, if you were trying to lose weight, one of the first things you would do is stop buying breakfast at fast food restaurants. In fact, most people who want protein shakes would probably be making their own breakfasts at home anyway.
Plus, a tiny glass of protein shake does NOT compare to the feeling of fullness from a sausage sandwich + OJ + Coffee. They also fail to mention that OJ has 140 calories per serving so you could cut calories by 20% just by not ordering that. It also costs $2.04 (in California) so you could cut costs by over 40% without that in your oder.
Typical misleading info to confuse the customer in my opinion!
A much better comparison would be to look at the cost of TAIslim compared to similar protein powders, and there are a lot of them on the market. They don’t do this – probably because the product is on the expensive end of the scale.
For example, the product below is a very well-recognized and high quality protein shake product, and is used both for weight loss and for building muscle. It is actually on the expensive end as well, because of the quality.
As you can see, the price per unit is pretty similar to the TAIslim product. However, in this case you are getting a 5lb container instead of 1.3lb. There are also many similar products at a lower price range.
The pattern of price is similar across most of the products from the company. In general, you can expect to pay much more than the average store price for a similar product.
Now, I get that these products are probably higher quality compared to the typical grocery store, but you could find similar products at a lower price if you were to shop around a bit. With 10,000 reviews and 4.5 star rating, this well known brand of protein will probably be just as good as meal replacement.
I’m always fascinated by the science behind any health company or product. If you’re taking something to improve your health, then there should be some evidence out there that the product actually works.
FreeLife does better than most companies by actually listing the scientific research surrounding its products. Some of this research has focused on specific products (such as TAIslim), while other studies focused on nutrients, like goji juice.
In general, the outcomes of research suggest that some of FreeLife’s products offer some of their claimed health benefits. However, you should still be cautious about health claims.
For example, one of their listed studies was this one:
It’s a decent enough study (although it has a pretty small sample size) and the study does show that TAIslim contributes to weight loss. Honestly though, I’m not particularly surprised or impressed by the results.
TAIslim is a system for weight loss that includes protein shakes, chewables and liquid. The idea is to use the protein shakes to replace meals and the other parts of the system to reduce appetite. In the short-term, anyone following the system would lose weight, simply because they are dramatically reducing how much energy they take in.
This outcome isn’t unique to FreeLife’s products though. Instead, it is true of pretty much any product or system where you are replacing meals and trying to reduce appetite. Overall, this can be a way to lose weight, but it is challenging to maintain long-term.
So, while the products from the company might meet their health claims (or at least some of them), products from many other companies will meet the same claims. This includes products that are much less expensive than what FreeLife has to offer.
For some reason, there are so many different MLMs that all use the term ‘life’ in their name. The term might make it seem like the company could change you’re your life, but most of the time that’s simply marketing. FreeLife certainly does emphasize this perspective – but how does it all stack up?
The opportunity side of the company promotes the idea of making money through FreeLife. According to the company, the opportunity offers the potential for financial independence and is easy to achieve.
On paper, the system does look simple. It just has the two aspects, getting customers and getting people to join in the company. This is the part that always bothers me about the MLM setup – it looks so easy, and so many people get involved because of this.
I’ve known people in the past who have joined similar companies. At first it is relatively easy to get people to host and come to parties, and even to buy products. After all, most people are interested in trying something new.
However, getting people to purchase consistently is much more difficult. Distributors for MLMs soon find that their initial social network stops wanting to purchase after a while, which means that they have to start looking further afield. Most people going into this type of company don’t have any real experience at direct marketing, so this process can be very difficult.
To make matters worse, you are promoting products that are expensive and that many people won’t have heard of.
That’s only half of the equation. The other half is getting people to join the “opportunity”. To be truly successful in the company, you also have to make sure the people you recruit actually end up being successful. That’s not easy.
The further you go in the company, the greater the potential to earn money. For example, this is part of the company’s compensation plan:
As you go up the ranks, you start being able to earn commissions from people deeper and deeper in your recruits. For example, Level 1 commissions refers to commissions from people you recruit. Level 2 refers to recruits of the people you recruit, and so forth. So, your best chance at long term income comes from getting a team of people who are effective at recruiting and supporting those recruits.
All of this takes time and effort. At the same time, each rank in the company has its own requirement, which include how much money you spend, how much money is spent in your group as a whole, how many ‘legs’ your organization has.
The complexity of the commission plan means that most people will get stuck at the low levels and will find the process of making money difficult if not impossible.
Making money with this type of business is possible and for some people it is even an effective way to earn money. For most people though, the challenges of the business are too hard to overcome and successfully selling products and recruiting others can be very difficult to achieve.
MLM VS Affiliate Marketing
Making money online is all about putting yourself in control of your own business.
This is one of the most fantastic things about affiliate marketing (what I do). You get to choose every aspect of your business, including what products you promote (even if they come from different companies). This means that there aren’t crazy commission schemes to follow and you also don’t have to keep trying to sell products to people who aren’t interested. Instead of focusing on recruiting a team, you can just focus on promoting stuff you think is great.
This can be an incredibly effective business approach and one with long-term potential.
Whatever type of product you decide to promote, it's important to own your own website to grow your business.
Parties only work if you have a network of friends with money in their pockets. Network marketing only works if your friends are interested in joining business opportunities.
With a website you can reach the entire world, and only promote great products to people interested in what you have to say. Plus, you open up doors to multiple streams of revenue like affiliate sales, ad click revenue, paid advertising, and even selling your own digital products.
