Freelance writing is one of many forms of online business, providing a way for people to make money online. This is particularly true for people who are skilled in writing, or who find it an interesting way of passing the time. However, breaking into the freelance business can be challenging for beginners, especially because it is very difficult to know where to start.
I’m here to give you some quick advice about how to get started making money freelancing, even if you have never done so before.
1. Create samples
As a writer, your most valuable asset is what you write. However, the people offering freelance writing jobs have no way of knowing how well you write. Many of them will have hired people who claimed that they could write well, but were actually very unreliable. Because of this, you have to be able to prove your skills, and this is where creating samples can be very important.
When it comes to making samples, one of the first things that you want to consider is the type of jobs you will be applying for. You need your writing to reflect the particular skills and writing style needed for that job. For example, there is little point making all of your samples academic writing, if you are trying to get a freelance job as a blog writer.
2. Edit for quality
Your samples will be the most important way that you make an impression, so you need to make absolutely sure that everything about them is perfect. If there are spelling and grammar mistakes in your samples, then your potential employers will think that you won’t be able meet the quality that they need.
3. Apply on freelance sites
Freelance writing sites have their advantages and disadvantages, but they do offer a good place to start as a beginner. Using freelance sites will give you experience at working with clients, at the way that clients respond and at how to meet the quality requirements that come with working for someone.
Now, freelance sites can certainly be challenging, and you might find them overwhelming at first. I would suggest start on one site and apply for the jobs on the site that suit your skills.
When applying for jobs on a freelance sites, it is important to focus on the quality of your application. A lot of people just copy and paste the same thing for every job, which is a really bad idea. Often, the employer will ask people to do specific things in their application, so that they know the person can follow instructions. If you don’t pay any attention to this, you are pretty much guaranteed not to win the bid.
As a general rule, it is best to put in a few quality applications rather than a large number of poor quality applications.
4. Perform well
Even if the early jobs you get pay very little and are frustrating, it is really important to do well on them. These early jobs help to create a reputation for you on the site, and as you gain experience, some of the people who employ you may choose to do so outside the freelance site.
