Being a beginner in anything can be seriously challenging, particularly as it can feel like you are swamped with information from many different sources at once. One of the things I hate the most about being a beginner is having other people tell me what to do, because I like learning myself. The problem is that when you are learning a new skill that you really do need to be a beginner, as challenging as that may seem. I’m going to talk about some good approaches for being a beginner, specifically in relation to online business, but really, the techniques apply to learning just about anything.
Learn from the experts
Within any field there are some people who have a large amount of skill and experience, and these are always very important to learn from. Experts in a field can tell you exactly what worked for them, and what did not. This information can stop you from spending a large amount of time and money pursing approaches that are ultimately wrong. In the case of online business, an expert or someone who is experienced in the field can tell you what approaches will help you rank in Google, and what methods will kill your rankings. Likewise, they can recommend some products and tell you which ones are little more than scams.
Practice makes perfect
You can spend a long time reading about the most effective ways of running an online business, but that will only go so far. I don’t know about you, but I find that after I’ve been reading for a while, information goes out of my head as fast as it goes in. For me, the most effective way of learning anything new is to practice it as I go along. This means if I’m reading a tutorial about how to develop a website, I’ll actually follow along with the steps. I find the information stays in my head much better this way.
Ultimately, how much you practice something is directly related to how well you remember it. Practice can improve your memory dramatically, and you might also learn something new during the process.
Go your own way
Learning from others is a critical step of beginning in a new area, but it is important that you move beyond this at some point. The problem with relying only on advice from other people is that everyone is different. People have different approaches to the way they do things, and these approaches may be effective for them, but not for other people. For example, I have read lessons and advice that promote particular formats or lengths for writing posts for an online business.
Personally, I never follow these. Writing is something I love, and something I am good at. Whenever I write, it is as long as it takes to say what I want to. I don’t constrict my writing by using a specific format or making sure it’s always above 400 or 500 words. Finding your own approach to things helps you stand out from the crowd, and helps you make your work more interesting.
Although I hate being a beginner, it is actually something I have been recently, as I am learning a specific aspect of online business, known as affiliate marketing, which I do not have a strong background in.
