Retiring from the military may mean that you are now forced to live on a fixed income. Managing bills on a percentage of what your income used to be is a serious challenge for many retired military personnel. Plus, with the US economy still limping along, and many companies hiring fewer full time employees to save the cost of retirement packages and health benefits, it's probably been a struggle for you to find a stable, well paying, enjoyable job.
I'd like to help you out today and give you an idea of how to start working online to increase your monthly income. There's a lot to cover, so make sure you're comfortable and ready to pay attention.
First, let me introduce myself. You can read more about me on my official About Me page, but for now, I'll give you the short version. My name is Nathaniell, and I'm from California. I work full time on the internet, and part of what I do is teach people to make money on the internet. I wasn't in the military, but I do have a great respect for those that are. After spending many years overseas, I have gained a true appreciation for those that risk their lives and dedicate their time to protecting the US and preserving our way of life.
What I Do
Thought there's a bit more to it (as you might have guessed), in a nutshell, what I do is build websites and write articles for them. I promote products and services from other companies, and make a commission for each product sold.
It's a simple, honest way to make money on the internet, and I love doing it. In addition to this, I also help people to learn how to do this, and repeat my success. This is what my website One More Cup of Coffee is about
I was inspired to write this blog post because a lot of the people I talk to on a weekly basis are retired military personnel. What their positions were, how long they where there, and what they are doing now varies widely, but I did notice a large amount of retired military folks looking for job opportunities online.
There are many ways to make money online. Some of them are legit, some not. Some are honest, some not. It's very difficult to navigate these scams, gurus, and snake oil salesmen because they are so good at what they do.
They show you their mansions, fast cars, and flash $100 dollar bills, all the while telling you how easy it is. They found a secret, and they want to share it with you.
I'm pretty savvy to these types of tricks now because part of what I do on my website here is to review these products and expose their misleading advertising tricks. But there was a time where I too was new to the game, and wasted my money on a couple of lame products.
If you have looked into other job opportunities or plan on continuing your search, then you MUST read the blog post where I outline the most common scams online and how to identify them. There are HUNDREDS, and for as many that get shut down, there are twice as many popping up.
What Type of Income Can You Earn?
This is a popular question, and understandably so. Though most successful marketers won't tell you exactly how much they earn (hey, who would, right?), you should know that there are huge range of incomes online. This is because working online is not like working at a normal job.
At a regular job, there are only 8 hours in a day. You get up. Go to work. Put in 8 hours. Get your paycheck. If you want to make more, you need a better job, or another job. You can't simply squeeze more money out of a 24 hour day where you have to sleep 7-8 hours.
On the internet, it's different.
For example, let's say I have a website with 5 articles that makes $100 per month. Then I write another 5. Chances are, that website is now making $200 per month. Earnings are usually not quite so linear, but you get the idea. If you can make $5, you can make $10. It's just about growing your website bigger.
You could also add a second website. If take one year to make a site that makes $1000 per month, then I can make another site that makes $1000 per month the next year. Now I'm making $2000 per month.
Once you run out of time in the day, you can then hire a staff to run your websites. Yes, it's completely possible (and very common) to outsource work. This has been made very easy with online job sites where employers can search a database for freelance employees. Tasks could be writing articles, fixing code, posting pictures, creating graphics, or even answering phone calls.
Yeah, the internet is pretty awesome.
So the earning potential of profitable website can be anywhere from $0 to millions. But wait, get those flashing dollar signs out of your eyes for a moment. There's a lot of hard work that happens before you can get there.
Things To Consider
The catch is, and the thing that prevents most people from succeeding in this space is the work that's involved to get your website. For most people, the idea of building a website is a little intimidating. It's actually a lot simpler than you might imagine, but I won't go into details right now because I'd still like to cover some broader concepts before jumping into that.
Even those that take the plunge and build their first site, are often discouraged by a lack of instant success.
Imagine that! They weren't good at something the first time they tried!
And this is also part of why I was inspired to write this post for retired military personnel looking for income opportunities online. I know that you guys are no strangers to hard work!
Surprisingly, the majority of your work is going to be writing articles. Don't laugh. It IS hard. Lots of beginners start out with a fire under their butt and do a really good job of writing consistent every day for a few weeks.
But after they see that the money isn't coming in, they slow down. And then they slow a bit more. And then they quit.
Consistent effort and a willingness to fail a few times is an absolute requirement for this type of work
Another aspect that is difficult to people is just the idea of learning something new. We often think of learning in terms of books and subjects we learned in school. We learned science, math, and how to play the piano.
But did you know that you can LEARN how to run a profitable website?
Think of it as job training. except instead of learning how to work on cars, do whatever people in cubicles do, or any other job opportunities you've looked at, you are learning how to build your first online business.
A Small Warning
Some people look to making money on the internet as a last ditch effort to pay the rent at the end of the month. If this is you, please wait until you are in a better financial situation to jump into ANY business venture. If you have kids to feed and clothes to buy, DO NOT spend your food money on anything but food.
One thing I absolutely hate about things like MLM (network marketing), cash gifting, and other types of money-making schemes that are promoted on YouTube and other blogs is that they make it sound fast, easy, and just within arms reach to fill your bank account.
This is almost never the case. As I mentioned above, there definitely is a learning curve, and there is a period of time where you will be learning how to properly operate your business before you can turn a profit. Some guys get lucky and start making some money in the first couple weeks of business, but most take 3-6 months to make their first sales, and many take up to a year to start making consistent money.
If you do decide to pursue an online business, there will be costs associated with it. You'll need a domain and hosting, and probably some training. Costs of operation for your first year will probably be a few hundred dollars at least. I don't mean to be a parent here, but I have spoken to many people that have taken on credit card debt, spend their mothers life savings and lost thousands of dollars to sketch “biz ops”. Please be smart with your money.
How To Get Started
Hopefully you're excited at the opportunity to start learning and earning! We're just at the beginning. I've covered some broad concepts, and I'd like to dig a bit deeper. I've created a free 5 day email course to introduce you to some more specific concepts of how people make money on the internet, and what I do to make money from my own.
Please ask me any questions you have here in the comments, and I'll get back you as soon as possible.
