What is it?
Affiliate Income Secrets is an in-depth video training course for beginners who want to learn about affiliate marketing.
The course was created and taught by Mike Thomas (aka Mike From Maine), who is a well-known, successful affiliate marketer. Mike uses his own, real-world experience to put this course together. He explains the strategies he uses for generating income online, with affiliate marketing. It’s about 22 videos all together, and it covers each step of building an affiliate business online.
If you’re a beginner you’ll find a lot of very valuable information in Affiliate Income Secrets. Mike Thomas shares his success and failures with you, so you can learn from them. The course is put together in a way that highlights his previous failures. That allows you to take advantage of his years of experience and money he’s lost. Essentially, you can go through Mike’s failures, instead of going through them on your own. It’s a valuable view into online business that might save you a lot of years of headaches and failures.
Before You Buy
After you buy Affiliate Income Secrets you’re taken through a series of upsells. Three to be exact, which is more than most products.
Each upsell is on its own page, so to get to the actual Affiliate Income Secrets course, you have to decline three upsells.
It’s a bit annoying. Especially since each new page contains yet another video from Mike that auto-plays as soon you land on the page.
Each upsell costs more than $30, which is more than the cost of the course itself. I guess they’re designed to go deeper into the topics Mike discusses in the course. But it seems a little backwards to me.
The upsells should be offered when you reach the end of the course, not before you even see it. If they are valuable, there’s no way to know you need them if you haven’t completed the course yet.
It’s like giving someone paper when they don’t have a pen. There’s nothing you do with it, until you know what you need it for.
Look, if the upsells are as valuable as the original course, then they might be worth the thirty bucks. But offering them back to back is just confusing, especially for a newbie. They should be offered inside the course, under the video sections that discuss the same topics. That would make more sense, and it would probably even result in more sales.
People rag on me when I complain about upsells, saying that “everyone does it”. They don't. Not like internet marketers anyway. When you go to McDonalds and they ask if you want to Super Size your meal, it's a smaller cost than what I just paid, and I know exactly what it is. When I buy a new appliance and they ask if I want an extended warranty, it's the same deal. Cheaper item, and I fully understand how it relates to the thing I just bought AND it doesn't affect my satisfaction with the thing I just purchased.
Imagine if you went to McDonalds and they tried to sell you a $20 dessert item before you ate your meal!
What I Liked
I found Affiliate Income Secrets to be a very useful video course for beginners. There are lot of important things covered in this course that a lot of other courses ignore.
Mike teaches some simple, easy to learn methods about how he was able to go from 0 to over $10,000 a month. The thing is, I actually believe him! After listening to his story, and watching some of his strategies, I can see how he would easily make that kind of money.
More importantly though, he didn’t say $10k a day, or even a week. He says $10,000 a month, which I consider to be a very realistic goal in affiliate marketing considering I've actually done it myself.
The course starts with an introductory video to give you a bird's-eye view of the fundamentals of Mike’s training. Aside from videos, Mike provided links where he runs his business, list of experts he has interviewed, and the income reports showing how he ended up successful in the online industry.
This introductory video is important because he also discusses his failures. He warns viewers about depending on one source of income, namely adsense, and how he lost several thousand dollars because of a few simple mistakes.
This introductory video alone, can teach you a lot if you’re a beginner.
The course is made up of 22 videos which offer comprehensive look at Mike's online business. I like video courses, because they are easier to understand than reading thousands words of text. I also like that I could see him, which makes the videos more personal.
With video, you get to see the exact steps being taken. That way you learn what you need, in a more direct, and easier to digest manner.
Most of Mike’s videos are under 8 minutes long. So although there’s a lot to take in, Mike has made it easier on you by breaking them up into shorter videos, that he divides into two separate sections. Kudos to him. Whenever I make tutorial videos, I tend to make them way too long and get off topic.
In video #8, Mike tells you about the importance of starting your email list. This is a common mistake beginners make, because they don’t feel like they’re ready for it. But Mike explains why that kind of thinking can cost you lots of money.
He also shares a few tips and resources for building and maintaining a good email list. The fact that Mike talks about building a list isn’t unique, lots of training products discuss the same thing.
What makes his unique is that he really explains why it’s important to start now, and he shows you what you’ve got to lose if you don’t. On top of that, he keeps it simple by showing you a few of his favorite methods, and he’s honest about their effectiveness. With the templates and steps he shows you, you can easily start your own email list as soon as your website is live.
I disagree that building a list is vital to earning money online. I have never really built a successful list and do this full time. However, I can certainly see the importance of building one if that is going to be your strategy for earning money.
Mike is not shy about admitting, explaining and showing you his failures. Throughout this course, Mike talks about failures that he had to overcome.
For example, in the List Building video, Mike talks about how he setup landing pages to gather email addresses in the past. He shows you what he did and explains why it was wrong, and then he shows you what trouble it caused him and how you can avoid it.
That type of information would take you years, and lots of money to learn on your own. He shares with you, the things that many other marketers are scared to admit. This is probably the most valuable thing about Affiliate Income Secrets. I have had my own shares of failures over the years, including losing over 50% of my income at one point. I always try to warn people away from my mistakes of the past to save them the hassle.
One of the great things you’ll learn from Affiliate Income Secrets is all of the resources Mike uses himself. You can find this information online, but not usually in one place. You’d have to dig around and compile a list of your own.
Instead, Mike shares his with you. And they’re quite good.
Here’s some of the resources you’ll learn about…
- The type of microphone and webcam to use for product reviews and interviews
- The best editing software for video, on PC and mac
- Mike’s scripts for interviewing guests on his podcast, and also scripts to use for video reviews.
- Free and cheap places to advertise your new affiliate business
Note: This is the only product I've ever bought and liked from JVZoo!
What I Didn't Like
Although Affiliate Income Secrets surprised me with how good it was, it does have some flaws. No course is perfect.
If you’re not a total beginner, much of what Mike talks about is going to be stuff you already know. He covers a lot of basic material, that you need to know. But if you already know it, you’re going to waste a good bit of your time.
All in all, I’d say about half the course is newbie-friendly, and the other half is intermediate. It’s a good mix, but you stand to hear some familiar things.
It's also worth noting that if you buy this, it's probably a one-time deal. I don't know if Mike updates the training area frequently but one reason I usually recommend membership sites rather than info products is that the training will be updated, and website constantly improved due to recurring membership fees.
Too Many Upsells
This was a big turn-off for me, right from the beginning. As soon as you buy Affiliate Income Secrets you’re brought to a series of of upsells, each one more expensive than the course itself.
It’s not uncommon to see an upsell when you buy a product like this, but three of them is a bit too much. It gave me a bad feeling about the course right from the start. That feeling was put to rest later, when I got to the course, but that’s only because the content was good. Maybe that’s why he felt like it was okay to use three upsells.
Support is always an issue with courses like this. Just to be clear, this product is sold by a vendor, JVZoo, so they do offer any support you’d need for things like refunds, and maybe technical problems.
But that’s not really what I mean.
I’m talking more about community. While you’re going through this course you’re completely alone. There’s no one there with you. There’s also no visible support, or contact link inside the course area.
This is what makes or breaks information products.
No matter how good or bad the content is, you’re still going to have questions. If you have no one to ask, then it doesn’t matter if the course is the best available. You’re still stuck. Make sense?
That’s why I always give high praise to courses and product creators that offer a community, a forum, or some kind of way to contact them easily and quickly. Unfortunately, Affiliate Income Secrets offers none of those.
This is only 1 of 2 “info product” style courses I recommend. You'll notice on the top tab of my website, almost all approved products are membership websites. It's great info, at a more than affordable price.
