The idea of making money writing online is very appealing, but can seem overwhelming. So many people offer advice about what approaches to use, and often one piece of advice contradicts another. When I started writing online I was initially very stressed, and it seemed like I would get nowhere.
If you are finding this too, or simply want some friendly advice, read on.
In general, there are three main pieces of advice, or secrets if you will, that I can give you about making money while writing online.
1. Be Patient!
Working online might seem like an easy way of making money, but it takes time and effort to build up a revenue flow. Don’t try to rely on money from writing immediately, it simply won’t work.
It might seem like you are putting in a lot of time for not much money. In fact, when I started out I was often in the position of working hard for no money at all. It can certainly be frustrating, but over time you find your skills improving and you start to get noticed more.
2. Put Yourself Out There
There are lots of ways to get yourself noticed as a writer, and these are worth embracing. A common approach is to create a blog for yourself that advertises what you do, provides a general introduction to who you are and what you do, and in general shows off your writing style. Just make sure you don't bombard your readers with multiple posts a day.
This becomes something that you can link to every time you do a guest blog for someone, or even if you are seeking out work.
There are other tools you can use, but the most important thing to do is get active and engaged in the community. Social networking can provide you with a big advantage, particularly social networking sites that are more professional in approach, like Google+ and LinkedIn.
You may want to build up a profile and reputation on freelancing sites also. Sometimes picking up poor paying writing jobs can be a large benefit if you do them well, because you can quickly earn a glowing reputation, and access to writing jobs that pay much better.
3. Look for Multiple Revenue Streams
There are lots of different forms of online writing that make money, whether it is paid guest blogging, writing eBooks, doing jobs on a freelance site or working directly for people. The more versatile you are, the more options you have for earning money.
Some approaches may pay better than others, but they all add up. Also, if you are working with multiple communities of people, you will become known as a writer faster and by more people. This alone increases your reputation and ability to earn money.
While you mightn’t be able to quit your day job immediately, writing is growing as an effective way to make money online, and you can make a career from it.
I would know, because I have.
However, like anything, online writing is something that takes concentrated effort and time.
